Radiator grilles

Hi everyone,
Part One: as I am gazing in awe at a picture of the mighty GT2, one thing that particularly catches my eye are the gorgeous grilles over the front air intakes. I have a 997 Gen 2 Turbo that is not a million miles away from the set-up of a GT2. The difference is only bunch more German stallions and - I think consequently (and I may be wrong here) - a need for a bunch more air to push through those grilles.

Part Two: I am aware of the number of leaves, grit, and other road muck that gets sucked into the grilles on my Turbo....I have fashioned a coat hanger to reach right back and (carefully) clean these out. Moreover, on the forum I have read about the rapid deterioration of the radiators tucked up the back because of this muck getting in, trapping moisture, and leaching humic acid.

With these two parts, I have approached OPC a couple of times and asked why I cannot have grilles fitted. The answer, of course, is that it would void the warranty, and coupled with this I have had a couple of very lame attempts to explain how it would restrict airflow etc.

Can someone please explain the logic of this to me? I know a lot of people have fitted grilles (and may even detach them when taking the car in for a warrantied service) but surely there has to be something more to this? I simply struggle to reconcile how a monster like the GT2 which must gulp far more air through pretty much the same aperture can do so through mesh while my humble Turbo would suffer tremendously?

Hello K, surely you are the same K I know... can there be two? Each with a black 997.2 turbo?

I have a set of Rennline grills going on in a few weeks time. My warranty will be up in may and I don't plan to renew again.

I share your logic, if GT2 and GT3 can breathe with these grills then my 997.2 Turbo will be fine. In fact with fewer leaves clogging the rads I suspect it will breathe better.

There are other options, Zunnsport in the uk sell removable ones that pop in the front and DW Performance make their own that fit behind the bumper like the Rennline ones do.

Good luck.

The fact is, it doesn't restrict airflow but is the simplest excuse for discouraging owners from fitting mesh in the first place.
If you're into your extended warranty period, there is a possibility your car won't pass the 111 point inspection with mesh fitted and will therefore not be eligible for renewal. It seems to depend on individual PC's take on it. Theoretically you have fitted a non-Porsche approved part and have therefore breached your extended warranty contract. More enlightened PC's don't make a song and dance over it and will pass the car irrespective.

Clive

Then you are surely the same... this feels like an old 'Allo 'Allo episode - (raises glasses as though they were an effective disguise) "It is I, Leclerc!"

Did you not used to own my car?

My car has rennline grilles fitted and passed the OPC test for extended 2 year warranty without comment.

I've been looking into this as well over the last few weeks. I'm getting rather fed up with having to ferret around the rads in an attempt to clear out the gunk. I found four ciggy butts in there at the weekend, not to mention the usual handful of leaves.

I suspect the argument about restricted airflow is utter nonsense and part of an often blanket ban on anything non-OPC. I'm happy to be corrected on this forum if someone can provide scientific evidence to the contrary.

The Zunnsport grills looks extremely well made but unfortunately they fit on the outside of the horizontal slats at the front obscuring them - a great design feature of our cars, in my opinion - whereas the Rennlines sit behind. The only downside with fitting the Rennlines is the front bumper needs to be removed, although an easy enough job for the DIY enthusiast or the local independent.

I'm probably going to go for the Rennlines, purely for aesthetic reasons.

Simon

PS. I'd still rather have the new GT2 RS though!

Hey Simon.

DW Performance in Wellingborough custom make grills that fit. Who S the bumper. Call and ask for details.

Hi Joe,

That's great to hear. I was emailing Kev just yesterday to arrange booking the car in for a spring oil change. I'll think about getting him to fit some while I'm there. How do his compare with the Rennline ones?

i have only seen pics of Kev's. They look good. My Rennline products are nicely formed And yet to be fitted.

Black or grey? I thought I'd go for black as they'll probably look better with the GT silver.

I'll look forward to autumn and winter runs without the need to go fishing around for dead leaves afterwards.
