Project 924srr27l goes Racing for 2018

I guess it had to happen!

The spec of this car has been a HOOT for 5500 Road miles since it was finished in August 2016 after an extensive
restoration, and lots of modifications.......

I met the team from 911 & Porsche World last November at an Oulton Park trackday where they test drove the car on the road and
also a session on the track. They will be publishing a 6 page feature potentially for the (March or April Issue) but this day was also
the first time the Intrax suspension and revised Wishbones and stub axles was tried in anger and the results and experience was
Impressive enough for me to seriously consider Racing the car, having also lapped in a 968 caged Ex-racecar the 924 compared very well.

When a Sponsor and (Ex Group A Rally driver) expressed an interest a deal has been struck to enter the car for the
2018 750 (Motor Club) Roadsports Club Enduro Series which consists of 7 Races mostly 2 hours and one at 3 hours in the UK.
There is 2 races at Spa (Belgium) but we'll not be going there for our first year, maybe 2019!

The car now needs to be Fitted with a Rollcage, Extinguisher System, Battery cut offs switches, and a Seatbelt etc etc.....

The first Round is Donnington March 18th, then Oulton Park 18th March, Rockingham 10th june, Silverstone 11th August and Snetterton
7th October.

Lots to get done in a short time, to be updated...

Yes, thanks by the time it's 18th March it'll be time to have a rest !

It's like one of those mad American TV fast and loud programmes, taking on a project which has a lot of work and details to get done but in far too short
a space of time !

The other car's in the class I'm entering will be much newer designs from the 90's & 2000's I just hope this 1970's chassis will do itself proud and the drivers
(both who are heading towards 50 years young!) also do their bit !

Great article Roger, see the strip down is well progressing...amazing how much weight you can save  and how scary it looks before it’s finished , caged and sprayed..helped my son do his trackcar to race car transition with the easy bits..still work in progress but he’ll get there as his car is now at his work where they have 5 lifts and all the kit. Btw, although 400 + bhp is great for a dragstrip, totally undriveable on a circuit so low boost and remapable ECU to suit conditions..all way beyond me I’m afraid, but he just wacks on his laptop and even makes adjustments mid sessions. Oh to be young again. Keep the updates coming.
regards
Graham

Yes thanks,

I thought the 250kg loss was very good going although this scale of a job requires thousands of pounds to achieve, but even though I'd lost some of the sound deadening previously
from the rear carpet and front footwells, there is quite a lot of bonded in rubber deadening material in all the 4 footwells, the tunnel and plenty of body filler in between all the panel lines etc....

All of this and and all of the carpet, and a load of wiring I didn't need took off 33kg !! + the Kevlar Passenger seat / mounts and harness @ 11kg (Total 44kg) was only replaced with 38kg from
the cage and extinguisher system so the car should be pretty much bang on 1000kg now.

The car was finished for the first round @ Donington 3 weeks ago but the event cancelled due to the snow! the 2nd round is next Saturday 14th @ Oulton park where I do hope we have no snow,
and even some dry conditions would be nice !

Was a great day getting back in the Racing groove and up to Speed!
We only had 4 flying laps in the 30 mi qualifying due to other people going off etc...and Safety Car periods

We Qualified 12th from 18 in class and 38th overall from 44 runners,

2 hours later we finished 26th and the car ran faultless, the Hour each was not as physically hard to keep up a good pace
although any rhythm was frequently broken with lots of others car's in the 2 faster classes lapping us, so the rear view mirror was
something you had to look into every 10 seconds!

Laptimes tumbled and both drivers improved by 4 seconds from Quali to the race.
We're approx 8 seconds a Lap off the best in our class, which is a lot but it was 12 and we fairly confident that this will be
reduced by another 4+ seconds further from our driving and then 'd we have another 4 to get from the car.

We knew our Spring rates were low and the racing certainly confirmed this as the car began to roll more than we'd like.
Driven quite hard on a Track day is one thing but Racing in a Competition with lots of Money and talent about is another

The next outing is Silverstone in August which at least will allow us some time now to send the Dampers back to
Holland (INTRAX) to be re-valved with Full Race Settings and they will be combined with Stiffer springs on all 4 corners.

We're probably looking near to 450lbs fronts and the current ones we raced on are 170lbs!

Update:

All 4 INTRAX Dampers have gone back to Holland for an extensive rebuild, Race Pistons & valving, Race Bump to Rebound Ratios and will come back with 4 New Coil Springs which will be 168% stiffer on the front @ 456lbs and 110% stiffer on the rear @ 628lbs with the Torsion bars removed.

As the class regulations are very "open" we need to join the "aero" club and make the car produce less drag from the front back,
and less suck at the rear from the drop in pressure so we're lowering the front spoiler, adding a lower splitter tray, covering the underneath with flat sections as much as possible and adding another wing element to the bridge style rear deck spoiler.

The brakes were working fine in the race, but after inspection the pads and discs are almost glazed with lack of use!
The pads are street / semi Trackday compound with a Low CoF (Coefficient of Friction) for reasons that most people do not want to have to replace them every 500 miles! and / or have lots of Dust and wear also to the discs.

The problem is our 20 piston Wilwood system (6 piston front / 4 rear) is in effect overkill!
And because of the amount of multi piston Torque available and the car's light weight (1040kg) we are not etting enough heat into them or are they really having to do much work.

The car's lightweight internals (Knife edged crank / Wossner lightweight Forged Pistons / 968 Rods / Aluminium Flywheel) all equate to 8kg a loss of all these spinning parts, hence when you lift off the throttle the engine's RPM behaves like a Motorcycle by coming down quickly this effect with a high compression Engine creates a form of engine braking so the brakes are not required or needed to do a lot of work.

The car will be able to be pushed much harder into and out of Corners with the new Race suspension, so we will also be able
to load the brakes up later, harder and even trail brake to the apexes etc..

With all this in mind we're fitting much higher Coefficient Of Friction pads from Mu 2.5-3 to 5.5 which are described as an agressive
pad which works instantly from cold and can also handle higher temperatures.
