Bad news on my 944

I've not posted up or been on here for a while mainly due to be rather depressed about the actual state of the bodywork on my 944....

I had her checked out for the main sills inner and outer being done over the winter but when the chap did his thorough investigation he found that the rot is into the floor pan, front bulk head and rear corners ( drivers side worst ). So current repair estimate just to sort the rot somewhere between £5k and £7k....

And thats most of my budget done ( for sorting the whole car , suspension, clutch etc ) if it hits £7k. And i could probably buy a straight one for that...

And she is still looking mint from the outside...

That suggestion has had me googling and on eBay! Found one on eBay for £200....not many about as i suppose most get binned due to rust...

Sorry to hear about the car Matthew..I'm one of those optimistic types..you know, glass is half full rather than half empty....that shell, if truly as good as the seller states looks very promising. I would view it as one door closing leads to another opening..what an opportunity... to start with a bare shell, you could do a 'Paul' on it and fully restore the car. Get it fully stripped, add the wings and doors and spray it red....then begin reassembly.....yes I know...it won't be a 5 minute job and it won't be cheap but think of the end result?

That's what I would do....:)

I don't recall where I saw it now but there was a good Turbo shell with a detachable cage advertised relatively cheap recently. A job for Paul Ruddy perhaps ?

Thanks for the thoughts and replies chaps....going to get a second opinion as well. Luckily its not costing me too much where she is stored so can play the long game! Any body know or had dealings with Trans9 Automotive? From Swansea, been very helpful today and actually sounds like he wants to do the job!

I hope you didn't tell him you'd had quotes of £5k+ already.

I had a job once, it didn't agree with me, far better letting the Mrs work and me spend

William Armstrong's Turbo S shell. Had 2 new sills fitted and was in perfect condition with no rust. BUT, I think it sold last week

Sorry to hear your bad news. I guess you're in a dilemma as to whether to spend the money and fix your car or invest it another one. I've spent a lot more on my current 944 that it is currently worth, slightly helped by the increasing values.

I did sell (well trade in) my 924S many years ago when the amount of work it needed was multiple times its value and I had a number of annoying problems with it so finally lost patience.  I spent a number of years with those funny Porsches with the engine in the wrong place before coming back to the 944 fold.

I hope that which ever course you take it works out.

regards

John

Thanks again for the replies/ideas and thoughts, much appreciated. Well the chap from South Wales has gone very quiet not replying to my messages for him to come and take a look at the car ( which he offered to do ) and Retro Restorer have not got back to me at all. Hunt for a shell continues on the side....

To cheer myself up just booked tickets for the Classic Car show at the NEC ( Saturday ), hope to see some of you there.

Well..the supposed meeting with Trans9 at the NEC was a no show, he has not attempted to get back in touch ( despite me trying to contact him ) so i'm binning that one. So back to square one. Need to find someone that wants to actually come and bloody look at the car and do the job. Retro Restorer not returned my enquiries....Trans9 talked the talk but disappeared.....on the verge of giving up.
