Importing a Classic car

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone had an idea on how much it would cost to import and register a 1970 911 from Continental Europe? all the expenses to get it fully legal and covered for UK roads.

thank you very much

If the car is currently in an EU country there will be no taxes or duties to pay. If coming from Switzerland, for example, you will need to pay VAT. To make legal for UK roads you will need to convert the headlamps to RHD dip. This isn't so easy if your car has H1 headlamps, RHD lenses are hens teeth, although Karman Konnection tell me they do have lenses available. If it has H4s you will need to change the complete headlamp assembly. Then you need an MOT and a couple of forms to fill in (probably online) for the DVLA.

From 20th May, no MOT is needed so will register mine as still hasn't UK plates... after 10 years.

MOT currently doesnt require headlights to be changed either .. just need to have deflector tape fitted to the lenses

MOT exception starts on 20th May 2018 for cars over 40 years old. I believe any vehicle built before 1st January 1978 (could be registered later).
MOT is voluntary so if you like one you can still get one. Not bad if you pay £28 to check brake/handbrake efficiency etc.
Also, if the vehicle is not maintained i.e. in a dangerous condition your still liable for fines/points/etc.

And where the car is imported from non-EU, VAT is reduced to just 5% if the car is over 30 years old.
