986 for the track - need advice!

Hi,

I'm looking for a 986 mainly for track use. I'm as new to the track as I am to the 986 (after buying a Macan earlier this year it was inevitable things would lead in this direction.) There would appear to be a great selection of 986's in the £5k to £10k range with varying mileage and age. From what I've read, mileage over 60k is generally a good indicator as major problems would typically have occurred by this point.

If anyone has any experience or advice, bearing in mind I intend to use this primarily for track days, would be great to hear from you.

Thanks
P.s. I did search for similar posts but couldn't find one so apologies if similar questions have already been asked.

Hi Toby,

I can't speak from experience but plenty of people seem to run the 986 cars at track days without problems, but it could just be luck of the draw. Apart from the RMS/IMS/bore scoring issues you've probably read about, if you're fitting grippy track tyres the higher lateral G-forces which can be generated can lead to oil starvation problems, although a sump extension kit is available.

Apart from brake and suspension upgrades you may want to think about things like replacing the water pump , fitting a lower temperature thermostat, an under-drive pulley (reduced drag from the engine ancillaries) and a PAS cooler. If they'll fit, GT3 front brake ducts could be useful.

You may want to PM ChrisW on the Cayman forum. He raced a 987.1 Cayman S for a while and experienced a few issues; he should be able to give you some insight into useful mods and potential problems.

Good luck in your quest!

Jeff

Frankly you don’t need to upgrade the brakes - the BRSCC championship use the original calipers and OEM type drilled discs; just use decent pads and proper race fluid.

As suggested oil surge is a risk so worth fitting a baffled dump.

And you’ll likely want stiffer suspension to avoid sea sickness!

Chris.

As much as I like my Porsches as road cars my advice would be to buy a Lotus Elise for track!!!
