Pirelli P Zero's - Again!

I thought I'd post a link to recent thread on PH regarding the above. I know there has been lots of discussion in relation to tyres and, in particular, the Pirelli's on here, so thought it may be of use!

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=231&t=1683742

My own two pennies worth is that I currently have N0 Pirelli P Zero tyres on my car, which are the original tyres since build (i.e. about 4 years old). I've been in contact with Pirelli directly about the cracking on my car and they have advised that I should take them to have the tyres replaced (at my cost) then ask the fitter to comply with the relevant complaint procedure around faulty tyres - whereby Pirelli will arrange for the tyres to be picked up and assessed. Any damage that is due to the fault of the manufacturer will result in some form of compensation - which will be pro-rata against the current wear of the tyres.

My rears are pretty bald, so that would mean not much compensation. I've also agreed with Porsche as part of the purchase of the car (as I raised the cracking with them when I purchased the vehicle) that they would pay for 2 new rear tyres when I come to replace them.

Truth be told, I've been holding out for some PS4s to become available in 'N' rating. Michelin are not particularly forthcoming with regards to release date, but anywhere from September - November has been spouted. I'm not sure my rears will last that long, so will probably have to go for N1 rated Pzeros, which I understand to be a step up compared to the N0 incarnation.

Hope the above helps.

I can't recommend the N1 P-Zeros. I have them fitted as OE on my 718 Cayman S. After 7000 miles and 3 track days the rears are down to 4mm.

Michelin Super Sports and Cup 2's are in a different league compared to P-Zeros. On the track after a couple of hot laps the N1 P-Zeros go off and become all slidey. If you don't do track days this won't be a problem, but I still wouldn't fit them again on my car.

I'm also awaiting the release of the N rated Michelin PS4S in 20" sizes for my car.

Life is too short to worry about N spec I run PS4S on 2 of my cars and Cup2's on the other 2.

N spec suck money balls, live life now imo (my OPC don't care about N spec anyway) they know I run good tyres and Michelin are Porsche tested , nothing would stand up in court regarding a warranty refusal.

The car won't be used on the track (unfortunately!) so my experience is only road use.

I must say I haven't been impressed with the tyres thus far, having previously used Michelin on my old M6 (MPSS). I find the debate around 'N spec' tyres to be fascinating, if not infuriating as I can see both sides of the debate.

I've spoken to my local OPC and they too can't really comment on the impact on warranty claims if you run with non-N-spec tyres.

I would probably try the N1 spec P-Zeros, appreciating they may not be much better, but I'm not sure I want to experiment with the PS4S yet. I've also got the original dealer to pay for 2 new tyres as part of the deal with the car, so I suspect he will only want me fit those via my local OPC and use N-spec tyres. I have this ongoing saga with Pirelli directly, but to be honest, I can't be bothered faffing with taking it to an official centre, or going through the complaints process. I was hoping they'd send an engineer and he'd agree they were faulty and they'd pay for 4 new boots at the OPC, but it appears it doesn't work like that.

Just to add, I get the impression that the N-spec rated PS4S will be a LONG way off. The dates shift out constantly when you contact Michelin directly; so I would not hold your breath.

I have just spoken with a Michelin executive who tells me:

New Panamera will have Michelin PS4S as standard, however PS4 will be shown on the tyre wall because the name PS4S had not been adopted when Porsche marketing/technical material had to be frozen.

PS4S standard fit ex-factory on 718 20" wheels on production starting now. 19" coming (comment was "watch this space" so introduction date not certain but confident it will happen)

991.2 PS4S will be standard 20" tyre from September production

Whilst Michelin would like to back-homologate latest tyres for older models Porsche has not been enthusiastic (my personal guess is it is a resource issue) but Michelin continue to work on ways to achieve this.

The to be announced Cayenne will have PS4S tyre marked as PS4 and of course this SUV tyre has acoustic foam inside so not same as sports car tyre.

Is that just a Michelin thing, or should I be trying to find out what has happened to the foam inside my Pirelli P Zero NO tyres?

I completely agree, as Mr D has stated, N-rated tyres are the proverbial PITA.....and more expensive. Some OPC's couldn't care less, others are sticklers for the rule book.

My current P Zero N1's won't last until September at this rate of wear. I have Oulton Park track day booked in November, and it's along haul south and back north for me so I need enough tread left to be legal for getting home.

If PS4S N rated 20" sizes are not available at my local retailer by September, I'll go for the non N-rated option. either PS4S or Cup 2's. My 718 would love Cup 2's, only tyre sections for the front concern me a little bit. Only 245's in place of 235's in 20" sizes. Suspension clearances may be an issue on the inner tyre wall.

I'll say it again, on the track, the N1 P-Zeros simply don't perform to my preferences on the 718 CS, as I have specced it, and thankfully still capable to drive it.

Just thought I'd update this thread to say I received an email from Camskill this weekend saying they had stock of Pilot Sport 4S tyres (265/35R20) in N0 spec.

I haven't checked, but I know a lot of us have been waiting for this.

On the subject of P-Zeros, Pirelli are now offering a fuel gift card worth up to £100 for Club Members who purchase Pirelli tyres from one of their Performance Centres or from a Porsche Dealership. See this month's PP page 64.

^ Thank you and yep, in stock and listed at £265.

They are also listing but no stock ... the 235/35 x 20 NO

....

Regarding the PZero NO`s ...

They are on my recently acquired 981 CS PDK (20"), they are all `cracked` but verified OK by the OPC. (I had the same discussion with Pirelli as PJ1200).

Having now completed 3500 road miles in the past twelve weeks, in a wide variety of conditions I find them excellent [:)]

I recently changed all mine to N1 P Zeros and whilst I'm not track legend, with my limited skills I find them to be fine. I would still however expect the PS4s to be that little bit more confidence inspiring, if the MPSS (I owned on my m6) are anything to go by.

As we're on the subject of tyres, do people ever use any mobile tyre fitters when changing their wheels over (for example from summer to winter wheels)?

I'm tempted to use them as it will be a faff getting 4 tyres across to a tyre fitters then the porsche (separately as 4 tyres won't fit in the Cayman!)

Event tyres seem to charge about £80 for the service, including balancing. Seems reasonable and convenient.

My local garage changes 4 wheels for £20. (Wheels = wheels with tyres already fitted) It takes them 10 minutes.

Yes, I buy most of my tyres from a local mobile outfit ... not the cheapest but the quality of service, knowledge and support is excellent.

They also change over our seasonal tyres, cost is much the same as you have been quoted.

Have also had the local OPC fit tyres, an excellent job which includes an underbody etc. inspection and for no more cost than other outfits.

I did mine last week and I did not charge myself a thing! Mind you, at 73, I did struggle to lift each 295/35 x 21 wheel and tyre.

Thanks all.

Normally I would take them to a local garage, but as I said, getting 4 tyres/wheels into the Cayman is not going to be the easiest of things (if at all possible) and will not reflect well on the platinum interior either!! So mobile is the best compromise.

Will give these Event guys a try and see how we get on.

Anyone gone and ordered PS4 N0 for their car yet?

I've had confirmation from my local independent Michelin tyre supplier that PS4S N0 tyres in the 20" sizes for my car are available for allocation now. Rears are in stock at Michelin Stoke on Trent, with fronts ready by December 21st. Prices each fitted and balanced are £261 rear, and £210 front. Seems reasonable to me.

I've ordered a set for my 718 CS for fitting early in the new year.

PCGB Oulton Park track day next week will see the P-Zero N1's finished for me. They are an improvement on the awful N0 version, but for me they don't have the durability and consistency of grip compared to Michelin Super Sports or the awesome Cup 2's.

I'll be reporting on my opinions on the PS4S in due course next year.

I have read Porsche's webpage on 'approved' tyres. But, I will perhaps show my ignorance by asking this question:

What does the N0, N1.......N6 actually signify? What differnces would I be likely to find?

Very good question! I can't wait to see the answer. It might also be interesting to find out how they differ from the Audi and Mercedes versions as well.
