Recent collection of new car from factory

Has anyone collected their new car from the factory recently ? I ask because I wondered how the system works vis a vis registering the car as new with the DVLA when you return to the UK . Latest DVLA guidance suggests that there should be minimal delivery mileage on the clock ( doesn't specify a number ) and even goes so far as suggesting that you have the vehicle transported from dockside to your home and keep it off the road until it is registered . It is also states that driving a car with european number plates is not permitted on UK roads .
Their seems to be a disconnect here between the DVLA's requirements and how the factory collection currently operates , or am I missing / misunderstanding something ?
Robert .

    Hi Robert,
I did factory collect about 12 years ago and as far as I am aware, you still travel on "German" tourist plates... until you reach your dealership in the UK, who have all the UK plates etc sorted.  So your car is in effect in "transit"  from the factory to the dealership, but driven by you, instead of being delivered by car transporter.   I am assuming you are doing an official UK Porsche Centre "Factory collect".  Its  a bit like being allowed to drive your car to the MOT station, if its got no MOT...

We collected our 718 Boxter from Zuffenhausen last September.
Included in the cost were German "Zoll" plates (not sure that I've spelt that correctly) which are a bit like trade plates and provide 9 days of insurance cover anywhere in Europe
You have to get the car back to your Porsche dealer before they run out and within two working days of entering the UK. The OPC then puts U.K. plates on the car and does a first registration.
Ours was registered with 772 miles on the clock without any problems, but there are two bits of paper to sign about the "importation" to allow that to happen.
