Porsche Switchable Exhaust System (PSE)

As insurance policpies require all modifications to be disclosed a failure to disclose would provide a legitimate reason to challenge any claim in whole or in part.

I have a heavily modified car (bigger engine etc) and there was only £75pa extra on the policy cost from stock to post-modifications. It does of course depend on your insurance company whether they wish to charge extra. It is an OEM option which if fitted originally they would not have been aware of but personally I'd disclose and move insurer if they are difficult.

Hi Guy's
I am thinking about putting a PSE on my 997 Gen 2 Carrera S, but just wanted to know if you need to notify your insurance company as this may be classed as a modification + did it increase the insurance very much ? Also I would value any comments on the PSE system, I have driven a Cayman S with this system fitted and apart from the exhaust note is there any other benefits. It also seems to be a plus when selling a car, but I have no intention of selling this one as its my third Porsche ?

I understand why you want to change, I upgraded my 997 Gen 1 with sports exhaust to a 997 Gen 2 which was way too quiet. I have fitted a Hayward & Scott centre silencer. It's not over loud at lower revs but has a great sound when you get the hammer down. Other benefit is that you save weight beyond the rear axle.

cheers

Steve

Hi,

I love my 997 Gen 2 Carrera S, HOWEVER I find the standard exhaust note very disappointing . The car is under Porsche warranty so I assume my only option is to go for the Porsche Switchable Exhaust System as I have no other/cheaper options without invalidating my Porsche warranty?

I must admit I do not require more power or performance only better sound.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Yep, Porsche Sports Exhaust is the only option if you want to be assured of maintaining your Porsche Extended Warranty unless you can obtain written acceptance for an alternative.

I’m debating sports cats, and PSE install. But the standard PSE is not great on DFI cars. So checking with Gert what the possibilities are for a “GT enhanced” PSE, if that makes sense!

I had PSE retrofitted by OPC Guildford a couple of years ago for about £2100. It's definitely worth shopping around because each OPC sets their own pricing. I negotiated my price based on another quote I had received at another OPC.

As it's factory fitted it didn't make any difference to my premium. If you get this fitted then you should know that it will automatically turn off when traveling between 25 and 45 mph, however this can overcome by unplugging the cable in the engine bay to make always on or by using an intermediate switch from Carnewal (google carnewall pse switch). This is easily installed and removed so shouldn't impact your warranty as long as you remove it prior to servicing.

I have the switch and also later added the Haywood and Scott centre silencer bypass which works well with the PSE and makes it similar in sound to the Gen 1 PSE, which is louder than the Gen 2.

Approx. £150 inc shipping, and you would recoup most of that if you were to sell it later on.

Mine was about £2200 too, at OPC Guildford, approx. 2 years ago. Shop around and mention that you've received cheaper quotes from other centers as they will often undercut each other to get the business.

Hi,

Just had PSE installed. I had MOT and other bits and pieces so will say exhaust around £2.5k.

So just had around 30mile drive (All kind of roads and speed) and very very disappointed as can not hear much difference?! Might be me......I thought the difference will be considerable. Anyone can please tell me is it me? I have called the OPC and plan to take the car back to be checked........

Any input will be appreciated.

I assume by your disappointment that you have a gen 2. The dfi engine is much quieter and the 3rd muffler doesn't help either!

See previous post about the speed restricted cut offs.

After my PSE was installed I had the Haywood and Scott bypass fitted and this works well with PSE.

Happy to provide a demo if you're anywhere near GU19.

Hi Nigel,

Thank you.

Yes it’s Gen2. I’m just surprise that there’s not much difference.....I thought it will be noisier.....or at least that I can feel the difference..... seems like a very costly mistake. I assume that Hayward and Scott bypass will invalidate my warranty?

I don't have a warranty on my car.

My understanding is that it won't invalidate your warranty, however if something in the area of the modification was to fail as a direct result then this wouldn't be covered.

As the bypass pipes are just replacing the third silencer with straight pipes it's not likely to cause any other issues.

Best to check with your local OPC but I do know some members of the 911uk forum have done this, and other mods, while still under opc warranty.
