SAT NAV UPDATE

Anyone had a Sat Nav update?

If so what did it cost?

My 997 just needed a new CD (at the usual Porsche premium price)

I have a cheepo Sat Nav which I use when renting a car and it comes with lifetime updates but I doubt that Porsche offer this facility.

Cheers

No one done this yet?

I had the usual local OPC reply "depends on how long it takes" but no indication given. I don't want my 991 to be the first they do as every time my software has been "updated" in the past (including my 997) it has had to go back again for a second attempt.

Cheers

Hi

i haven't done it myself but this update is an accessory listed on the Porsche gb official accessories website. Listed at £298 for my 991 c2s.

Thanks Jeff

I hadn't thought of looking there.

Price seems to be the usual ridiculous Porsche mark up, I will see if it is diy or has to be done by OPC,

Cheers

I've been a life long Porsche enthusiast, but their policy towards PCM updates really angers me.

For customers having made the substantial investment in the PCM system, Porsche should support them with an affordable update programme. £99 pa would be acceptable - and most people would get it done at the annual service. Other manufacturers do this. In fact, even in 'aviation', where everything is substantially expensive, GPS data and mapping upgrades on panel mounted systems are only £100-£200.

Porsche would get more business, more of their products would have the latest tech, which would heighten their appeal.
And, importantly, their customers would be happy. As it is, most resent the cost of the upgrade, so won't go for it - badwill all round.

Ideally, the Club should be negotiating a deal on this with Porsche.

Couldn't agree more!!

That is Porsche for you and mostly the OPC's just regard us as annuity income, no wonder so many indies are doing well.

Ridiculous prices particularly the Sat Nav as my cheap hand held, which I use when in hire cars, costs pennies to update.

You are spot on with the aviation Sat navs, our Garmin 1000 gets updated at minimal annual cost.

Cheers

It's not just Porsche - we have the same complaint about the Mercedes cost of updating their Comand system, where with the recent version you need not only the DVD's but also a code generated from the VIN and their main computer system - and the code alone can be £150, with the same again for the mapping update. Pure cash generation - the older system I have in our car, the DVD's are re-useable in another vehicle, so I've been able to buy "second user" genuine DVD's at a fraction of the new cost.

Interesting!

Anyone know how the 991 update is supplied? Is it on a USB drive?

My 997 was a CD that you could load yourself which I was able to do easily in spite of the OPC saying that they had to do it with veiled threats about cost of rectification if I did it myself.

Cheers

Unfortunately you need the Porsche PIWIS technicians laptop to do updates on hard drive systems. So for now we are stuck with manufacturers rip off prices.

And at a guess, if it's as slow as the MB system, it takes about 2-2 1/2 hours to install the update, thus tying up a service bay for that time - at main dealer rates!!!

I've had a quote from Leeds OPC for £190 all inc to update ours, they'll need the car for approx 4 hours, apparently the discs take ages to load up. Now where's the Tom Tom gone?

I think I need to go ahead and do this as well, doesn't look like I even have seven-digit postcode entry on mine. Does anyone know, is updating the maps inclusive of a PCM version update if necessary?

Also as it seems the OPCs offer it for less than the £298 listed on the accessories site, will this be the same with all OPCs do you think? I wonder why it's priced so high there...

We were told it's just a map update and the 7 digit allocation and that's it. Can think of better things to spend £190 on [8|]

Good point. I wonder if there are details available somewhere of the extent of changes in each new map version. 7-digit postcode seems useful though so I might go ahead this time regardless.
Am hoping my OPC will at least match that price.

Just got a reply from my local OPC. For my 991.1 the maps update will cost - wait for it - £414 inc vat. They inform me the maps were last updated April 2015 and the next update will be in 2017. I might just wait then.

M666LMJ who at Leeds gave you the £190 quote are you happy to provide their name? Does anyone know if it's worth shopping around at different OPCs to get a better price - is it common for them to undercut each other for the same service / parts? I would have thought Porsche would have a uniform pricing policy throughout their network

Well that about just sums it up!

Great cars but lousy and expensive customer service.

I can buy a top end Garmin or Tom Tom for that which will be much better than the current Porsche one. If the update is merely for the Sat Nav then I certainly won't be getting it and frankly I doubt that I will get another Porsche. There are several credible alternatives.

Cheers

Had two prices for SatNav update.
One from West Byfleet which was £350 all in (VAT, labour etc)
The other from an OPC, which for exactly the same job, was £414.00 (all in).
The OPC explained the £60 difference by saying:
"I can confirm that Porsche West Byfleet are an independent garage and are not within the Porsche retail group."
(Go figure!)
The official Head Porsche response was as follows:
"By way of explanation, the Porsche Centres are entitled to charge their own hourly labour rate.
This is the reason you are seeing a difference in cost."
I bought a TomTom Go 6100 for a long trip to Australia for about £300 with lifetime updates which is amazing.
i think know what route I'll be traveling (pun intended!)

Having "specced" our 718 I asked my salesman for his opinion. The only comment was what about PCM? I replied; I have a Garmin thanks that I can switch between our cars.

That said, I have been looking at updating the maps on my current device and it seems money better spent to buy a new one with up to date maps and better software/graphics.

I have noticed Navigation Update on the Tequipment website for my car (991.1, PCM 3.0/3.1), it says update to the 2016 version. Is this new? Does anyone know if this has recently been released or will be the same as 2015?
