TURBO S CENTRE LOCK Wheels

Hi All


A friend of mine is interested in getting a Gen 2 991 Turbo S. He has pointed out that the Centre locks which I hate cost around £2,400 as an option on the ordinary Turbo so he is unwilling to spec down on the S.

There was a thread that I cannot find outlining that apart from the nuisance problem of getting them off (mostly solved by Clive's excellent post) there was also some limitation on the number of track miles "recommended" before "servicing" Is the limitation "recommendation" still in force?

Basically servicing is recommended after 4,200 track miles. I think this is still current policy.

That's an awful lot of track mileage and if your friend was thinking of doing that much, he would be wanting a thorough service of the 5 bolt fixing set-up too.

I've done 45K on my centre locks to date and they're as good as new.

As your friend is contemplating a new car , previous track use is not an issue, but now even the GT4 with lug nuts carries a track mileage guidance limit.

I'd carry a tyre puncture repair kit if I were lucky enough to have one of these great cars as no roadside assistance service will be capable (and neither would you trust them) to remove and replace the wheel.
 
Thanks Clive, I have read it again and bookmarked it.

Mileage seems reasonable but interestingly I didn't receive a letter although my OPC knows that I track my car about four times a year.

A few years ago my 997 Turbo picked up a puncture on the Le Mans track and our enterprising IT guy used a matchstick to seal the puncture long enough to get to the ferry.

I now carry a puncture repair kit for the reasons you state!

Several warranty/recovery services will only pick up from public roads so this is worth checking.
My other gripe about Centre Locks is that I cannot get them off for thorough cleaning and I am not prepared to pay the £700.00 I was quoted for a torque wrench capable of tightening to the required number (I recall around 600 newtons!)

Had a look but note that it is 3/4 inch square drive but I recall my Porsche Key is 1/2 inch. I am sure there are adaptors available but generally they are not really suitable for heavy jobs.

How long is the handle? Unfortunately I am getting on a bit plus I am 5ft 6 weighing 144lbs and I would need considerable leverage!

Just checked and you are absolutely right, the socket is [FONT=calibri"]¾" drive. [FONT=verdana,geneva"]
I have still not decided to get the necessary torque wrench yet but you have saved me certain embarrassment!

Consider the Sealey Torque Multiplier too http://www.sealey.co.uk/PLPageBuilder.asp?id=20&method=mViewProduct&productid=11450
They're available from around £160 if you shop around.

I've used one for years perfectly satisfactory, but of course you'll need to employ a regular torque wrench too, but at least the setup would be a bit more versatile than the heavy weight 600Nm version that wouldn't really be suitable for much else.
