Today is the 4 week anniversary of my ownership of my 996 and I'm loving every minute. Yesterday, in bright wintry sunshine I took a jaunt to The Royal Standard of England (www.rsoe.co.uk), allegedly the oldest freehouse in England, for lunch with a colleague. Great drive encompassing twisty A/B roads, a nice dual carriageway stretch and a bit of M4. Well worth the trip - the devilled kidneys were fantastic and the beef suet pud was delicious!

Had a good day:) Changed plugs, coils and took off the old muffler brackets that were rotten and replaced with two I purchased from a breakers in America where the climate is better than here in great condition. Also took off the old manifolds which had started corroding these were a pain with all of the bolts being ceised until I put the mini conductor on them and they came out with great ease. Fitted new stainless manifold headers and gaskets. Next job new brake fluid, coolant, and filter and tip oil.

Finally got the front PU refitted with grill and just had to go for a drive.  I tried to post a group of images, but seems it's limited to one per post.  Note: don't try drag and drop from a Mac either!

Thanks Pieman7. Yes it comes in black or you could spray it black. The standard sheets are approx. 900mm x 300mm which should be enough for the turbo intakes.

Hey guys

Just joined the club so thought I'd add my first post and say hi.

Tried to restore my cloudy headlights at the weekend and although there's a big improvement im still not happy with them  going to give that another go. Got the rear bumper going in for some TLC after someone scrapped it coming out of a parking spot...luckily I know who it was.

Thanks Pieman7, yeah watched quite a few videos...did this using the 3m restoration kit and a drill...think I'll buy the sandpaper and attempt it by hand next time.

failing that attempt I'll get someone out to do it.

Eeek, Pieman, that's a big hit on the wallet. Mine goes into Dovehouse cars next week for a major servic/fluids & general inspiration, so I'm expecting a similar hit.
Leon, I have the same problem with my lights & have brought a kit to have a go myself, but I might leave it to the professionals.

Big hit but well worth it. Check out the light repair on u tube. I've done a lot of work on the car myself but geometry has to be done properly

My first big bill as a 911 owner. £1300 for new front control arms, rear brake hoses, New exhaust fittings & full service (including tiptronic service).

But on the plus side it now drives perfectly with no rattles. Top quality work from Dovehouse cars.

Re: What did you do with your 996 today? 2016/01/30 18:52:56 (permalink)
Removed rear sill and wheel arch trim. No joke, but found enough dirt to fill a plant pot. Drivers side particularly bad with minimal rust. The passenger side shows signs of rust beneath the paint, so ordered some Dimitrol protection. Also, removed suspension strut bars, one lateral and two inclined (these being badly rusted) - the inclined requires sill trim to be removed. I will get these cleaned up and get some quotes on powder coating - the lateral is aluminium, so this should clean up easily.

Many of the underbody fixings are cross head self tappers - so after 15+ years of corrosion, don't expect all of them to unscrew easily or at all! Another order placed for allen head self tappers.

Cleaned rear wheel arches and inner trim in prep for some wax treatment. Someone had decided to colour code the sill trim in Ocean Blue, it was a bit of a cowboy job to be frank. Anyway, it had to come off - I had to be fairly aggressive with some cellulose thinners and a stiff brush. After some graft they came up well with some Autoglym bumper restorer.

This picture shows rust evident on passenger side after the sill trim is removed - bottom left, above is grime! Road dirt and moisture get trapped between trim and bodywork - over time this will rot the sill box section. This will go unnoticed even to the experienced and missed by inspections - so beware!

Not been on for a while but done a bit to the car.
Tinted the windows and lights front and rear
Fitted a new starter motor
 Plastic oil filler neck
 Plastic water pipe joiner
All idle wheels changed
Alternator clutch wheel changed
New Michelin pilot sports on rear
 Adjusted the quick shifter
Had the car chipped on a rolling road
Fitted 997 air filter housing with top speed air intake
Had the Porsche badge embroidered on headrests
Fitted braided brake hoses with AP prf 660 brake fluid
Plenty more in my mind to do.
