987 Over Rev Ranges

Most people on here have heard of the over rev check criteria effecting the renewal of Porsche Warranties

On the Gen1 Cayman S Redline is on the dial at 7200 and so the range one over rev is stated as:

Range 1 Over rev >7200 but <7500
Range 2 Over rev >7500 but <7700
Range 3 Over rev >7700 but <7900
Range 4 Over rev >7900 but <8400
Range 5 Over rev >8400 but <9500
Range 6 Over rev >9500

Over rev 3 and above need checks and acceptance for warranty whereas in general 1 & 2 are not considered harmful and are more of a warning level but things can change so keep an eye on the rev counter.

Does this only affect manual or can a PDK be made to be over-rev?

You can get Range 1 and 2 with PDK if you are in "manual" mode and bounce off the rev limiter - well at least I can!

I'm speeding because I have to get there before I forget where I'm going.

Buddy, Do you have the figures for a 987.2 2.9?
Thanks, Andrew.

Andrew,

As far as I can see, the figures Kevan's given are also applicable to the Gen2 cars.

This list was revised in June 2009 so should be applicable:

Thanks for the link Jeff, as the rev range gets extended with each iteration of the Cayman the ranges will rise but the number of ranges and which effect warranties etc can be expected to remain as they are, so when the red line goes from 7,200 to 7,300 it just bumps the rev range limits by 100rpm.

Interesting reading about the ignitions recorded in over rev zones.
When I bought the car I had 9,859 in range 1 (27 seconds total running time), 19 in range 2 (0.05 seconds total running time)- none in higher ranges 3, 4, 5 or 6...
What reading do people have on their cars?

On purchase mine had 5362 in range 1 (1415.400 h), 37 in range 2 (365.600 h), none in 3,4,5, or 6.

My 2010 Cayman S had the following when I bought it in 2014 with 23900 miles on the clock:-
Range 1 - 5820, Range 2 - 61, none on the others.
In two years and seven track days I added 60 to Range 1 (slightly over-enthusiastic blip on a downshift).

I have just p/exed it on a 2014 S. This has zero on all ranges - sweet.

Alan

Sorry to interject with a slightly OT question but I am presently looking around for a Boxster, can these over rev instances be read from the normal drivers information display or does it need software/hardware to access?

It needs a PIWIS to access the ECU where the over rev info is stored

I'm speeding because I have to get there before I forget where I'm going.

Thanks for the answer Captain, I suspected it would not be so easy.

PC's are instructed to disregard over-revs in PDK equipped vehicles.

That is interesting, or could be disturbing.....we are looking for a PDK Boxster presently, we just love the DSG/PDK type boxes.
Being told they ignore the over revs could be a double edged sword really, then again how likely (or easy) is it to seriously over rev a PDK equipped Porsche?

It isn't easy - that the point Clive was making.  I have a few in range 1 and 2 where it bounced off the rev limiter and that's all you would/should ever get on a PDK car - and those are ignored anyway on any model.

I'm speeding because I have to get there before I forget where I'm going.
