Tiptronic gear selector switch

Just taken the wrappers off the car since last year and found that it wont start in 'P' - only 'N'.
I can move the selector from the 'P' position but no crank unless I move to another position and bang it forward (or start in 'N').

It has failed to start on occassions over the past 12 months, but looks to have gone completely now.

Can anyone advise if the switch can be opened to try some switch cleaner or if poor adjustment on the selector cable may cause the problem (or anything else to look at before splashing out on new switch assembly).

Also, does this need the Porsche kit to set up or is it just plug and play?

Cheers
Dave

I think it will be the multi-function switch on the side of the gearbox. The switch contacts break up inside, causing the sort of problems you describe. The switch is plug & play. No need for any setup with the computer. You are supposed to remove one of the ATF pipes running next to the switch, but I believe it is possible to do it without. The switch is part number 986.325.612.01 and they are £193.28 +VAT. Ouch!

Thanks Richard, thought as much. I may just leave it for the moment and put up with starting in 'N' for now and see if the local OPC have a half price clearance sale on them in the next few months [:D] Will probably replace it when i get my hands dirty on the next service in the warmer weather. I have a problem with my 2005 987 tiptronic gearbox. The drive would cut out for a split second when driving and the gear selector indicator warning light comes up on the dash, the selector switch was lubricated at the last service but now the problem has returned in a big way. When pulling away it goes from first to second and then back again and the indicator light for selector in wrong position comes on. I tried it in manual and it was working ok until a week ago and now its doing the same, I'm now to frightened to drive it as I don't want to damage the gearbox, any ideas what the problem could be and how to repair it
