944 Insurance recommendations and prices - FAQ thread

New member
We get a lot of new owners on the forum asking about insurers. There is no short-cut to getting the best deal - be prepared to put in some work on the phone as forum recommendations are only one possible source of info.

Specialists may or may not give a better result than a comparison site depending on your exact circs, and what you want to use the car for. However, we do get asked and the following info may give you some ideas as to whom to start calling. Note that you may get very different results from the prices other people have been quoted, and please share what you learn in due course,

The following is a compilation of insurance recommendations and experiences posted on this forum relating to various 944 models since December 2010. Where members stated the car and premium along with other circumstances I have quoted those details in brief summary. As and when you renew your insurance it would be helpful if you added your own details to this thread, using as much of the following information as you wish to contribute. Please put the info in this order at the start top of your posting before making any further comments as it will help people to make comparisons and make the summarising easier:

1. Date of deal 2. Forum Name 3. Driver age 4. Licence points 5. Car: Lux/S/S2/Turbo/Cabrio etc 6. Mods 7. Value (if agreed value) 8. Garaged / Driveway / Street 9. Mileage limit. 9. Insurer. 10. Premium.

Example: May 2011, ForumSampleOwner: age 35, clean licence, 1988 944 Turbo 220, Promax Level 2 conversion, £8,000 agreed value, garaged, 5000 miles, Brokers'R'Us, £234.46.

Obviously if there is info you would prefer to keep to yourself, just add as much as you feel comfortable with.

I propose to update this thread periodically by taking all the data that people add and adding it to the summary in this top post. When the oldest material is 12 months old I shall start to ditch anything more than a year old. That way it will stay reasonably up to date hopefully without too much effort. At present the dates are the dates where people have posted, not necessarily the dates when they got the premium. That's as much as I can provide for the time being, but the entries should become more precise over time if people keep posting.

May 2011

Loc944: Try Performance Insurance 08444 935710. Been with them for over 3 years. 944 Lux 2.7

Djone101: RH (Richardson Hoskin) and whilst I realise everybodys circumstances differ I don't recall hearing about anyone paying less than the £135 I had to stump up for a renewal last week. (5000 miles, garaged, 43 yrs old (me not the car) etc) Glad to say I've never had to claim but have been with them for 19 years now.

Sulzeruk: I use Haggerty who have been excellent over the years. Always competitive and the people you speak to on the phone are all enthusiasts so usually end up chatting for a while about cars. You won't get that with many Indian call centres!

Wolfie308: S2, ungaraged, only car/daily driver, 5k miles, clean licence, 10 years NCB, age 55. £275 inc breakdown and legal cover on classic policy with ClassicLine

Deafasapost: 3rd car, classic policy ltd mileage 3k £130 f.c. with breakdown cover. has to be garaged overnight if at the address. 1989 944 Cabrio.

Apr 2011

Fil911carrera: Footman James, £230 a year fully comp + UK and Europe brakedown cover, legal cover, travel insurance, 4500miles per year. 944 Lux 2.7.

Ukmastiff: I can get insured for £110 to £130 on a 2.7 or an S2 believe it or not but having had many quotes and 2 policies on turbo's I think you will find that the car (Turbo) is set as a ' much ' higher risk. I'm a fellow old person with full N.C etc and my turbo policy taken out last year was about £230.

Steves944: Perfomance Direct, limited miles fully comp policy, 944 LUX, £135 pa.

Copperman05: ClassicLine, they offer me Unlimited mileage on a classic policy, only car, agreed value £6500, parked on street in London, fully comp, Porsche Club trackday and 30 day European cover for £400. 1989 S2

Mar 2011

Suffolk944: The two I have used for my 944's are Lancasters and A-Plan and have been happy with both.

Chrishazle: Classic line - I've had my 968 with them for 2 years now. A9XXC: Performance Insurance for my '83 2.5 but they weren't interested in the '89 2.7 so that's with Carole Nash

Colin944: always used aon been good so far. 1989 S2

Hairyarse: For my 944 I used Adrian Flux, they were quick and very helpful and open long hours on the phone which helped. 944 Lux.

Spyro_x: Footman James for me, sorted me on a limited mileage policy. 1991 944 S2. Rmarnie: RH Associates have been great - very reasonable premiums.

912UK: Hagerty have been great. I use them for 6 cars and I also use Classic line for the other two. Would not touch Adrian Flux with a barge pole in fact I would rather walk than use them. AON were simply the best EVERY period.. but Footman James took them over ( well Aon wanted out of classic cars ) and again I would not hold Footman James in the greatest of regard. 944 Cabrio, £155.

Jonesey: RH. Legal Assistance, breakdown cover and commuting, £155, 3000 miles, 944 Lux 2.7. Cococola: £156, 5000 miles, £5000 agreed value, 944 Lux.

Mr.FixitNorm: Lancaster @ £117 for the year with 3000 miles. 944 Lux.

billus99: I definitely would recommend RH - they do specialist Porsche and Triumph insurance (£170 and £70 p.a. respectively, no mileage limitations). 1989 944 S2.

Zcacogp: around £500, aged 35, me and Mrs zcacogp to drive, NCB as long as your arm, one no-fault accident 4 years ago, kept on the road in East London. Alarm & immobiliser. 944 S2.

DivineE: £1107 age 27, 7 or 8 years NCB. 1990 944 Turbo, extensive mods, 404hp.

Dec 2010

Deafasapost: try footman james, you need to be 25 so you qualify. The cheapest for me by far but i'm 40.

GPF: You could try Classic Line. Mine is £350 for 5,000 miles, £11,500 value (yes, I know!!) and all my mods declared (1988 Turbo S, modified)

u63af: I am 27 insured with Adrian flux 944 turbo with roll cage, coil overs and engine mods declared. £380. 2000 miles

Porkie 1664: Classic Line. Mine is £180 for 5,000 miles. 944 S2

Frenchy: Classic Line, got my BMW with them, yet Footman James for the 944. The pair of mine were £182 FC, Agreed Value, Unlimited Mileage and all mods declared. 2 x 944 Turbo

Wardtimothy: Lancaster will insure virtually any car from the early 90s and before for £210 with 5000 limited mileage. . They don't like mods though. 1987 944 Lux.

Porka944S: I just got a quote off of Lancaster £184. 944S.

Lookingfora944: £800. 38 year old man, no points, never claimed before. I have zero no claims as I have not owned a car for over 5 years. London, car is parked on street.

Simkin911: RH Classic - in the porsche mags - I'm with them and pay £180 pa.1992 944S2

Picopro19k78: I agree RH. Have been with Lancaster but these were better. 944 is about £180, 5k miles, up to 3 months Euro cover, breakdown home and abroad, £5 mill personal etc.

Asiangunner: Footman James, 27 yrs old no NCB needed, garaged, 3000 miles Supersport: Aviva insured as daily car, 10,000 miles, SDP + limited business use kept on the drive way, although it is actually garaged, £250 this year. As a new customer you can get it cheaper as they do get 2 months free and when using a cash back website like Top Cash back you get some back. I got £70 the first year. This is with no alarm, car worth £2k for a 40 year old with full no claims. Otherwise RH and Classic Line are both good as I have used them for the 911.

Gordon0310: I can only get £914 with footman james, on a 6000 limit, garaged and 4 years no claims. I was hoping for it to be my daily driver but all of the quotes were over 1k, or £989 with kwik fit. I dont have another car so can't get in with the classic policies. (Later added): For anyone else around my age. I just added my dad as an additional driver and I am now seeing quotes for around £800 from companies that offered me insurance for £2100 for example.

Peter Empson: Aviva, much cheaper than everyone else for the 944S (£300 for 8k, including commuting). 36270k: Got a good deal from Lancaster for my 1983 924 , £123 fully comp for 3,000 miles a year , kept on driveway.

Northern924: 39, no points, 1 yr NCB, £422 FC, but that's SDP& Commuting, unlimited milage and only £250 excess. 1988 944 Lux.

Pixie*Porsche: Lancaster, 22, always had classics (apart from one car) so no NCB, £500 at the moment but will drop to £200 aged 23, 944 Lux

Elliot: Have been with classicline 01455 639000. £170 for 944 Lux, 5000 miles Jonathan: Footman James - unlimited - £100.00 excess - £5,500.00 agreed value - £270.00. I'm 44, 944 Lux.

Markofay: £1100 fully comp, no mods, 5000 miles a year with 250 excess, age 25 but only been driving 2 years, computerquote.com. 944 Lux Outrun944: £287 - 5,000 miles - just about to turn 30 years old. Classicline. 944 Lux

Lowtimer: age 48, clean licence, 1990 944 Turbo 250, Promax Level 2 conversion, £10,000 agreed value, kept in locked garage, 5000 miles, RH Specialist Car Division. £244.67.

Fat Albert: Aviva, £360, age 41, 8000 miles, kept on driveway, 944 Turbo 220 with boost enhancer and filter cone.

_ian: £1800 a year, moved from Canada so a new UK drivers license, though over 40 and no claims in over 20 years of driving. But from the insurers point of view, a new driver in a Porsche.

Me. [:)] Age 44, S2, HP15 postcode, third car with missus on it to reduce premium. 5K miles per year, agreed value, inclusive recovery and legal but that's not worth anything. Not garaged but on own drive, with modern alarm fitted with certificates. Runs own garden maintenance company, no convictions in last 5 years but one non-fault accident on another vehicle. £300. Classicline have always been best for me as most classic policies require a garage, but they cover me on the drive.

forgot to add to the above first post of listings and details. i'm 40, the car has a clifford alarm/immobiliser, and the insurer footman james. i did do a quote on line, BUT phone them up after they give the on line quote and you WILL get it cheaper. i have full no claims, no accidents and no points, but as with classics, the ncb is redundant on the porsche. they will ask for a valuers report if you want it insured for a guarenteed sum and want proof of the car in up to date photees [:)]

I've called them all & RH Specialist are by far the cheapest, quoted me £176 on 944 Turbo SE. www.rhclassicinsurance.co.uk Tel: 01277 206911

Recently renewed my insurance with Grove and Dean who don't seem to have had a mention above. Found them by using moneysupermarket dot com where the best quote was £140 by Performance Direct. Rang them who passed me to Grove and Dean who added what I wanted to get to the cover below. May 2011 - Trevor68: Aged 33, Clean Licence, '86 Turbo, No mods, market value (£5k max), Driveway, 3k miles, Insured by Grove and Dean (underwritten by Highway Plan), Premium £175 including legal, European cover and UK breakdown Previously with Footman James who this year came in at the most expensive at £257 when they were cheapest I found last year.

I was with ClassicLine but just moved to RH Specialist Insurance as it was less than half the price! Paid £136, aged 36, 3 points on licence, '87 Turbo, some mods (boost enhancer, Bailey DV, cone air filter), value £4k, 5000 miles a year inc Business Class 1, garaged overnight, my only car. Chuffed with the price

just got my '82 944 insured for £200, fully comp as second car on classic insurance with heritage, 6000mls per year and ok to drive to work.... that's ok in my book... first day driving the 944....had fun...:)

Date of deal - 12th May; Driver age - 30; Licence points - 0; Car - 2.7 lux; Mods - none; Value - £1500; private (unlocked) offroad parking; Mileage limit - 4500; Insurer - Need2Insure; Premium - £412 (inc. admin) SDP only fully comp classic policy Haggerty wouldn't cover me as it's my only car but they recommended Need2Insure. It seems to be a Footman James policy underwritten by Equity Red Star. Calls weren't returned as promptly as I'd have liked initially but service since then has been good - helpful relaxed and friendly/chatty. So far so good!

Great quote today from RH for a S2 in drive.Shame the car didn't match. Will confirm price when in writing. Jonny

Can confirm RH quote, £135 comp, 3000 limited milage, parked in drive, old fart in East Yorkshire, S2, no compaints at that[:)][:)][:)]

I have been requested to post the resutls of another thread on here. My question: Hello Chaps Long time no post! I'm looking for ideas on insurance for my 944 Turbo. I am currently with Classicline, fully comp, full no claim, garaged, 3000 miles PA, old bloke. There quote is £237. Am I likely to do better by looking around and if so where. Thanks for all your help. Best wishes Robbie My solution: Hello again chaps, Thanks for all the advice and feedback. Just thought I would let you know the outcome. I tried RH as they seemed to be mentioned by a lot of people. They came back with a quote of £294. This was well above the £237 wanted by Classicline so I went with them. Thanks again Robbie The thread: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=622202&mpage=1&key=&#626747

Just insured 87 Turbo with RH. Fully comp, 5000 miles, kept outside, recovery, legal cover, European cover, etc £198 10% disc PCGB membership.

RH classic insurance. So pleased with the premium I use them for one of my MGs as well. The European breakdown cover has got to be worth having as most companies aren't interested if your car is over 15 years old.

Just thought i'd share some quotes I got from over the weekend: Details 26 years old No points 1984 Lux Declared aftermarket alloy wheels (just in case I decide to change them and also to judge how receptive to mods the insurer is) £3500 value Stored on driveway 5000 miles Full comp (if asked, I said I was a club member - I will be joining when I get the car!) Quotes: RH - No quote. I'm too young (must be 30 or older) Hagerty - No quote. I'm too young (must be 30 or older) Lynbrook - No quote. I'm too young (must be 30 or older) Performance direct - £3457 (hahaha!) Adrain Flux - £586 Heritage - £456 Sureterm - £507 (online quote - no mods decared) Footman James - £381 Lancaster - £234 (£5 less than the online quote which hadn't declared any mods!) I didn't expect there to be such a huge range amongst the specialists!

Insured my 85 944 Lux through KGM Motor Insurance fully comp for £111 . Social , domestic and pleasure but excludes travelling to and from work , vehicle kept in residential parking area , limited to 1000 miles per annum , 36 years old , 7 points on licence . Can't really grumble with that .

I have just insured my car,an S2,on a classic policy. They said that they do not take no claim bonus into account for classic policies and I would lose my no claim entitlement in the event that I,in the future, swapped to another insurer, or wished to insure a non classic car. My existing no claim bonus is not valid after two years non use even though my car is insured on a classic policy I am told. Are members aware of this?

ORIGINAL: simdel1 Just thought i'd share some quotes I got from over the weekend: Details 26 years old No points 1984 Lux Declared aftermarket alloy wheels (just in case I decide to change them and also to judge how receptive to mods the insurer is) £3500 value Stored on driveway 5000 miles Full comp (if asked, I said I was a club member - I will be joining when I get the car!) So, having bought a car, I had to amend the above quote. The half hour while they were requoting was tense! Additional details: Alloy wheels 1" larger than standard Retro-fitted leather interior Sports steering wheel After market gear knob Strut brace Aftermarket air filter Converted from power steering to manual rack. No NCB (second car) Final quote was £293. Amazingly cheap considering my age and the modifications!

Just reinsured mine, fully comp, agreed valuation £3,500, 3,000 miles per year, garaged overnight. I've got 3points and 2yrs ncd on this policy. Insured by KGM @ Lloyds, via 2gether insurance for £111.
