Turbo bodykits [PICS]

I had convinced myself that a bodykit for my Turbo was a step too far for my tuning obsession. However, I keep seeing TechArt kit pics that keep changing my mind back. The TechArt kits in particular are CRAZY expensive though, although if when my factory warranty runs out in Dec I take out the Tech9 policy then as the UK TechArt resellers they might do me a good deal if I ask nicely..

What do you think, too much?

TechArt Type II

TechArt Type I

Or perhaps I should wait to see what TechArt bring out for the facelift Turbo as their facelift Carrera efforts were much better than the first kits?! [&:]

Hi Alex If I was 30 years younger and able to fuel a tuning habit I would definately have considered a body kit. Looking at previous Techart conversions I think the Techart kit on the first series of pics is not over the top (even if the cost is). I know that the purist's out there will not agree as one has to say that there isn't much wrong with the original styling. One assumes that with the tuning that you have done that this car is a keeper because my only reservation would be how it effects your ability to sell the car when its time to move on? You only live once and if it turns you on then go for it

Indeed Steve [:)] Well in terms of resale, I have zero interest in the 997.2 facelift Turbo - which is much slower, quieter, less tailored to my suspension-prefs than my current car, and has a far weaker engine (proven by RS-Tuning getting hold of a Gen2 engine and showing that at the 550BHP level -> conrods, pistons and head gasket all start breaking). I may be interested in a 991 Turbo but it would have to be at least 200kg lighter for me to put a deposit down, and the chances of that are incredibly slim. I don't think any 'sports car' should weight over 1400kg myself. The handling difference is huge at 1600kg. Saying all that, if 2nd hand prices of the Lambo LP560-4 Spyder come way down then resales value of my Turbo may come into play. If I hadn't just bought an RS6 (with it's LP560 V10 engine plus 2 turbos) I would have used the money to trade in my Turbo for one of these (a very close decision): [link=http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff117/Alex911TT/cars/others/IMG_0151.jpg]

[/link] Back to Bodykits though, a few 996 Turbo guys have fitted 997 TechArt kits and actually increased their resale value as a result. So keeping the looks 'fresh' can have a positive result. The GBP<>EUR rate is shocking right now so TechArt part prices are even more scary than normal, but then again VAT is down at 15% so that cancels it out a little.

I followed an earlier post of your when you looked at the Lambo. We had one in the bar at the club meeting last month and considering I am a porsche only kind of guy, the lambo looked and felt pretty impressive. Having not driven one, I would not comment on its handling, but practical, surely not. Any way, why would you want 2 cars with the same engine. It is tempting though! But then you'd start tweaking again, wouldn't you! yes, you know you would Impressed that a Techart modified car improved resale, although I never did agree with the tear shaped headlights so if the techart kit converted them to the 997 style it is no suprise the re-sale value increased. One assumes you would keep the original colour or would you be completely radical and change colour as well?

Alex, I know some of the Techart guys in Germany. They're good lads and have an impressive firm that does a lot of development work on their products before marketing them. So, although expensive, they will do the job. [:)] Hope this helps. CU Sunday, Regards, Clive

Thanks Clive. Yes, I am well aware of the TA quality, I would only ever consider putting the very best on my car for any aftermarket parts. Tech9 are going to see if they can do me a deal. I guess my car would look a bit like this if I put on a Type II kit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B48xbyQtGNw

Alex Shouldn't I be telling you that you don't need the body kit and such things are a frivolity. Oops, no thats what you should ahve been telling me beofre I got mine done. Both kits look great. But I actually like the Type 1 in silver picci's. As it was put to me when tinlkering with my car - Its not likley to harm a resale price per-se, its with Mods you eliminate the "tyre kickers". Might buy, might not but only if its an outragoeus deal. There will be some one else who wanted to make the mods you've made. The key seems to be to stick to qulity items like TechArt, Cargraphic or OEM etc.

I didn't realize that - a definite must have then thanks! Yes the Type I kit looks good Tom in silver but the Type I kit is like 2/3 the price of the Type II kit and all it has on it is the front lip, the side skirts and the raised spoiler - and as a result it doesn't look THAT much different from stock. I figure if I am going to spend all that money I might as well make a more significant change to the looks. I suppose I will need to go back to Chris Franklin after any bodykit is fitted so he can rebalance the car [:D]

I guess this is close to what mine would look like (this example is GT Silver not Arctic, plus has darker wheels, and GT2 side skirts) http://sharkwerks.com/porsche/997-turbo-gt2/63-2009-ultimate-997tt-evt700-techart-type-2-noselift-and-led-lights-and-hre-p40-wheels.html

Alex not tempted to get the wheels painted titanium and the car re sprayed in GT Silver as well then[:D] Fair point on the type II bodykit - It'll look very tasty with the kit on[:)]

JZM do this conversion to the stock GT3 so it has the same vented bonnet as the GT3RS, according to them it increases downforce by 15kg at the front (996). I think the GT3RS has a canted front radiator to further improve this effect. I believe it directs air that would otherwise go underneath the car (lift) over the car (reduced lift or downforce) http://www.jzmachtech.com/shells/tuning_product.php?pageNum=2&porsche=996&model=996%20GT3%20Mk2%20Air%20Con&engine=3.6&year=2005&totalRows=24&id=8264
