Driving Pleasures to Come! 28 PCGB members will be meeting up in North Devon tomorrow evening for the start of a WOTI organised by R14 (South Wales). This comprises of a 2 day driving and sight seeing tour over Devon, Cornwall and West Somerset terrain. "We've enlisted some local knowledge and help with our route," reports Huw Jones, R14's RO. "consequently we're offering an eclectic mix of open highways, country byways and some stunning views. In short, some of the best roads the region offers and hopefully something to suit everybody!" he added. The convoy will consist of a range of Boxsters and Caymans (including a GT4) and a variety of 911's that will feature a 993 Targa, a 997 C2S plus the latest 992 versions in C2S, GTS and Turbo S guises. It all kicks off tomorrow evening with a drinks reception and dinner, followed by a full day's motoring on Saturday, gala dinner back at the hotel in the evening and a further ½ day of motoring out onto the moors on Sunday. It should be an impressive convoy on the road and if you happen to spot them over the weekend, please give them a toot and wave and wish them well on their way. Saturday in the countryside and out to the coast proved to be a classic trouble-free run - even if it were accomplished under leaden skies. But Sunday, well! What is it about Exmoor that doesn't seem to like Porsche tours? The last time we were there with R15, it was a pea-souper making driving a challenge and sightseeing particularly unproductive. This time with R14, it was 10 times worse with low cloud, horizontal rain and gale force winds, rendering the going extremely tricky and actually quite hazardous in places. Bad weather turned out to be helpful however, in our unfenced run across Brendon Common from Simonsbath down to Lynmouth. Visibility was OK here and the road, usually busy at this time of year, was now devoid of tourists, animals in the road or indeed traffic of any kind - only PCGB members were mad enough to be up there! 😒 After Lynmouth, the weather deteriorated rapidly and it was impossible to make progress in any spirited manner. In some places the mist, rain and road, darkened by overhanging trees, replicated what a descent into Hades must be like - we have been forewarned! 😱 One small group at the back took fright at this stage and decided to bypass the final section, only to find themselves stranded around Minehead, where the full force of the storm was felt and surrounding roads were closed due to flooding. Those brave enough to stick the course battled through several more miles of moorland and were very thankful to find shelter, rest and recuperation at our Ralegh's Cross Inn, Watchet finish with lunch laid on prior to saying our goodbyes and heading homeward. An exhausting, yet stimulating weekend in the company of new and old friends and most everyone seemed to enjoy the experience. It's one we won't be forgetting in a hurry, that's for sure! My thanks to R14 for the kind invitation to participate.
