Not Long Now……….. Hopefully!

Hi all,

Beginning to get excited as the my Porsche site has issued my VIN number to my 718 Style.

Hopefully not too much longer to wait and if anybody has info of VIN to delivery that would be great.

I have been reading up on PPF for the front end and I would appreciate any thoughts on this. I tend to do about 8k a year and keep the car 3 years….

Again if anybody else has been considering this I would really welcome your opinion.

Happy to share my thought and experience with PPF.

I’m on my second 718 Cayman, which I got in Feb and I do about 6k per year. I have PPF front and wings, and am debating side skirts. I got it because after 2 years of ownership of my first 718, I had a fair few stone chips on the bonnet and around the front of the cat. It really does attract them. The PPF is great. After only 3 months I can see a few places where it’s prevented stone chips that would have gone through the clear cost and paint. It’s not cheap but I’d say worth it if you want the car to remain looking as good as possible and not worry about getting stone chips. If you’re in the Leeds area, I can recommend AdvanceDetail. Did a cracking job on mine, both PPF and ceramic coating.

In reality, I’m not sure what impact stone chips have on resell value. It didn’t affect the value of my old 718 when I sold it back to Porsche after 2 years. Also didn’t affect my BMW M2 Comp which I had before the Porsche, didn’t have PPF and a few stone chips. However I’ve heard the likes of WeBuyAnyCar will say panels need a respray if there are any stone chips and knock this off their valuation.

 
Thanks for the feed back Kerry. My OPC is Wolverhampton, and glad to hear you are pleased with your PPF from AdvanceDetail. I think I am going to go for some level on it when it comes, with a ceramic coat as well…probably !

 
If you use Wolverhampton then have a look at Staffordshire Car Care. Craig and his team do a lot of work for them and he's done both my 718s

Call me cynical, but won't the OPC want to "recommend" this option and add it to their invoice before handover?

To give an alternative opinion on PPF, I'm not a fan. It's become quite expensive so you may want to look at the financials by comparing the cost of a simple PPF front end (£1500+?) to the cost of respraying a front bumper (the most affected area, <£1000)?

I can maybe see some benefit on rare cars where having the original paint could be worth something at resale, or a car that's used a lot travelling in groups where road rash is a real problem, but for a regular car and normal use I'm not convinced. Bear in mind that if it gets hit and damaged you're going to want to replace it at another £1500+ otherwise you're still driving round in a car that isn't pristine. All you're doing at that point is preserving the paint for the next owner.

All in my opinion, others are available, your mileage may vary etc etc

Also get a price from Monza Detailing in Worcester they did my GT3 and do most of my friends in the area in the Spyder club all happy with Taran's work. Did a good job on mine at a reasonable price.

I have it on most of my cars also have it ceramic coated.

 
Adding a different perspective to PPF , it certainly made me far less concerned about how you wash the car in the covered areas. I had the Xpel track pack fitted prior to collection of the new car which covered all the areas you would typically expect to pick up damage. Recently had this extended to include the doors and rear quarters up to the roof line, due to picking up a stone chip in a very random place. Would have been less expensive to get the entire car done at once, but you live and learn.

This was the approach I took after getting a full respray on my 964

I‘m with you 100% on that one. I don’t really mind a few stone chips. Shows that the cars been driven. Which is what they are for after all.

I have been happy with the gtechniq ceramic coating on all three used Cayman`s, in 40k the most prone area for chips has been the leading edge of the roof, apart from the GT4 whose air intake scoops are absolutely `plastered` on their leading edges and inside areas (in 23k)

 
Thanks again all for the feedback. I have a range of quotes now so just evaluating my options.

Still tracking as a mid July delivery so fingers crossed.
