Flashing Handbrake Light on Dashboard and Flick Switch

Good evening

Has anyone come across this problem on 2.7 PDK. About half an hour after parking up, with the hand brake on, the ignition off and the car locked up.

The dashboard handbrake red light and the one on the end of the handbrake flick handle flash repeatedly with what can be described as a solenoid/switch clicking in and out sound from around the offside front wheel arch.

It does this for a few hours and then stops as systems go to standby mode. If I leave the handbrake off I still get the sound.

Regards Chris

That’s an odd one Chris. Sorry I can’t help other than to say that like most electrical gremlins I think your best course of action is to run some Porsche-specific diagnostics (PIWIS or equivalent) to see if there are any error messages associated with the problem.

In addition to what Jeff says, quite often a battery in poor health can cause odd electrical issues so I'd look at that too.

Thanks, I am going to take it in tomorrow for a diagnostic check and get to test the battery out as well.

Chris

+1 on Dave’s comment about a battery check Philip.

All the modern Porsches have a lot of on-board electronics and, anecdotally, appear to be very susceptible to problems associated with low battery voltage (displays lit up like a Christmas tree!) maybe due to a faulty cell, so it’s always worth making sure that the battery’s in tip-top condition.

Jeff

Hi, just a follow-up.

Had the Cayman into Hull Porsche, who carried out a diagnostic check and traced the problem to a faulty alarm siren and damaged wiring from it. Alarm Siren replaced with new and wiring plus connections fixed. Everything else such as the battery was ok.

Chris.

Thanks for the follow-up Chris.

Who’d have thought that would be the cause of the problem? Just as well the diagnostics got it sorted. That’s modern CAN Bus systems for you!

Jeff
