Hello
I have a friend that has bought a 911 1969 rhd shell as a restoration build project. The shell comes with the original chassis number but all documents have been lost over the years. Is their a way of getting the original registration number for the purpose of re-registaring the vehicle with dvla. The chassis number is 1191001**.
The lad does not want to start the rebuild unless he can get a registration document.

Thanks

I think there is no chance of getting the original registration number as there is no cross referencing VIN to Reg number at the DVLA going back that far. The only hope is an age related registration number but you would have to prove to the DVLA the year the car was originally manufactured: PCGB can help with this. The other bridge to cross is that it is just a shell and DVLA might wish to inspect the 'vehicle'.

From integrating the Porsche 911 Red Book, the VIN number indicates that the car is a 1969 shell as the first two number the model number (”11” for 911) And 9 for 1969. The next number "1” confirmed the type of engine, in this case 911T and the fifth number "0” the bony type, which is a couple.

Car was produced some time between January 1969 and July 1969 before the B Series car was updated to C Series.

if you don’t have the original engine and transmission, you’ll need to seek a 901/03 engine and 901/06 gearbox.

As the post above, will be very difficult to source the original number plate. most wouldn't see this an issue with a car of this age, more important to ensure that the car is period correct, and that it has the correct engine, gearbox and interior.

There are a number of good books which can provide detailed information on what is the correct specification for that particular shell, such as "The 911 and 912 Porsche, A Restorer’s Guide to Authenticity”.

Finally, Porsche no longer provide Certificates of Authenticity (know as CoA), which would confirm some of the above plus the original paint and interior colours. There are a couple of contacts that can source this information for around £150. Let me know if you progress with the car and I can put you in touch so that your friend gets the restoration right.

The archive has a copy of the original Porsche Cars, hand written, log book recording of every Porsche that came into the UK through Isleworth from 1965 to 1974 inclusive. IT IS possible to obtain the original registration number if:
a) It was initially a UK car and therefore recorded in the Porsche Cars log book.
b) The car was registered to an owner and the dealer notified Porsche Cars [not all did so there are some gaps].
c) an image of the chassis plate is provided along with some form of image of the car - no matter the condition.
d) The owner is a Club member.

A letter signed by the Club's recognised person by the DVLA and any proof the Club can offer, such as a copy of the printout from the Porsche Cars, hand written log book. The owner has to submit the evidence to the DVLA, not the Club. Even recognised Porsche specialists have to go through this process if they require the original registration number.

I stress this is only available to Club members

Hi Peter,

Not wishing to hijack this tread, but do you know if there’s anyway to trace the registration number of a USA car, not expecting this to be via the club/ DVLA.

My car has California heritage, so any help would be welcomed.
