New EV Macan

Well. Now you can place your order. It's going to cost pretty much £20,000 more than the ICE and weighs 2.4 tonnes. It's also a bit bigger when it doesn't need to be. It's probably a technical marvel, hopefully the factory has learned something from the Taycan. But get ready for poor residuals, like the Taycan. To range anxiety we must add disposal anxiety. I took delivery of my new ICE Macan last month. If you want a new ICE Macan, get your order in soon; there will be no warning before they stop taking orders.

I was taking delivery of a new 718 a couple of months ago. Knowing I have also a Macan the OPC General Manager asked me about my interest in the Macan EV.

My response to him was as blunt (and negative) as michaelquinlan's post (above)

I assume that by ditching diesel, then gasoline, in favour of electrons, Porsche is seeking to be one step ahead. That's fine, as long as they're heading in the right direction ...

Thanks Phil, enjoy your 718!

You can probably guess why the OPC wanted to interest you in an EV Macan. But I have a bit of background.
At PC Guildford from which I took delivery of a replacement fuel Macan on 5th January, I was told the factory is forcing OPCs to take quantities of Taycans that they cannot sell. They have to out them at a current discount of around 15% to retail. "New Porsche sir, 15% off?" "Where's the catch?"

In fact Porsche ditched diesel a few years ago. 'Porsche don't do diesel' I told them should be the tag-line. After 8 u-turns since 2019, it is now believed fuel Macans will end some time around the end of this year. But don't trust Porsche to tell you when it is - they won't even tell the dealers until it's too late to order. There is big anticipation of the event and Macan order books are fuller than ever. If you want a legacy ICE Macan like I did, order now.

All retailers are having big trouble selling EVs. Demand has slipped very sharply in the last few months. Stellantis' brands (now nearly everything in Europe) are fining their dealers for failing to sell EV quotas. I am informed a number of Citroen dealers have handed in their franchises.

As an aside, it will be very interesting what the government does about failing EV sales. Currently Volkswagen, Renault and Stellantis are talking radical stuff about total amalgamation of EV operations to try to stem the incoming flood of cheaper Chinese EVs into Europe. Meanwhile BYD (that sells more EVs than Tesla) is looking at building a factory in Italy. The UK government has started fining manufacturers £15,000 per ICE car sold above ever-rising fixed quote limits. So ICE prices must rise and hit new car sales, a double whammy with lower EV sales. Looks like a car crash. Something will have to give.

I imagine the thing that gives will be the European and US car industry. Hard to see how they can compete with Chinese control of raw materials, advanced battery tech and economies of scale.

And who in their right mind will pay £100k for a “premium” car experience when all cars are BEV and range is all that matters? Porsche (and similar) face existential crisis.
