CENTRE CONSOLE LIGHTS

Hi All,
This is a bit of a simple question but one I can't find an answer for at the moment.
When the lights are switched on the icons on the centre console are lit up for the rear spoiler, sunroof etc but the rear wiper
does not light up and I can not see an icon for it on the plastic surround to light up. This is on a 993 C2.
Would somebody have a look at their car for me and see if this is the same on yours. Seems a bit strange that this is the only one that is not illuminated.

Thanks Phil

Hello sir,
the center console has three illuminated positions for the upper and lower switches. they will all be populated by a small bulb if the car had a switch in that position when new. The bulbs do fail over time , and I suspect that has happened to yours, I have in the past with a steady hand replaced them using a soldering iron with an  ordinary panel bulbs(slightly brighter)  , but the items Porsche used at factory are not available individually to buy . Porsche will only sell you the circuit board complete.I think you can buy led replacements and a close copy of the  original bulb from an electrical components  store.

perhaps the plastic surround has been replaced with a used item/ or purchased incorrectly , that did not have the wiper option present if you have no legend in the frame ? There are lots Of panel part numbers for different switch combinations.
regards, Christian ..

Thanks for your reply Christian.
You are spot on and my thinking is the same. It is likely that the panel has been replaced with the wrong one some time in the past and the legend is not there because of that. I will take the panel out and see if there is a bulb in that position. If not it proves the point. It's unlikely that the rear wiper was added at a later date and that's why it's missing.

I bet its the bulb as Colt says, unlikely to not have one as it was only really the RS that came without!

An update on the problem.
I took the panel off yesterday and the three lights work perfectly but there are only two legends
on the panel. Sunroof and spoiler. The wiper legend is not there, so it looks like the panel has
been replaced in the past with the wrong one. So I am looking for another panel, the correct one.
Anybody got a spare one they want to sell? or know of anybody that might have one.

...Hi, I'm a bit late to this topic but have been in the garage this afternoon and checked my car (1994).  I've had it for coming on 13-years and I don't think I previously noticed the illumination on the centre console! Probably because I don't drive much at night.
There's no internal illumination on the switches.

However, attached are a couple of pics taken this afternoon - not sure if you have fixed your problem or this is going to confuse even more.  Anyway, hope they help.

I did the Bergville Led Upgrade in 2015
Headlight to the xenon kit and all exterior bulbs to Led including the rear Hoop Breaklight.
I also did the centre Console Led upgrade too
Here is a link to my Gmail drive for pictures. Conversion is very easy and also comes with very clear step by step instructions
Mine switches are slightly different due to being a Targa

Phil - It would be interesting to check the option codes on your car (label under bonnet) and see if it was originally specced without a rear wiper.  If the wiper was added as a retro fit then maybe they only added the switch but not the legend.

I'd talk to one of the specialist recyclers (like PorscheApart) to see if they have one available - I can't see there being high demand for them so any 993 they have worked on should be a source.

Les - that looks like a light at the top of your rear spoiler switch - I don't have the light, just a plain switch.  What does the light indicate?

Thanks Les and Graham for your input.
Les - your photos show the panel as it should be, with the three legends lit up. The switches don't light up.
I have now bought a second hand part with the three legends in the panel and now I have full illumination of the panel legends.
Job done.
I now have spare, the three switches, panel with sunroof and spoiler legends and circuit board with bulbs which have been replaced.
If anybody needs these parts let me know.

...don't panic Mark, it's a stick-on rubber buffer thingy - the sort you get on cabinet doors - put there so I can feel the right switch of the three without looking.
Not another light.
Just something that seemed a good idea at the time, all those years ago.

Cheers.
