924 Restore - In Tank Fuel Pump

just starting what will no doubt be a very long restoration journey
is there an alternative to the very pricey in tank pump. Does anyone know the flow rate of the intank pump. Will it run without it (e.g just on the external pump) ? I dont have the internal pump, just the flange that bolts in to the tank - and a small piece of pipe which is very deteriorated - my current view is to maybe get an intank pump off ebay and fashion this on to the flange - unless someone has a very reasonably priced internal pump ?  I will be stripping the tank off to clean it out of all the gunge at some point over the winter -pic of what I have got and what I should have!
