993 Targa 'rim bolts'

I believe the bolts/nuts on the split rim 17" Targa alloys are referred to as 'rim bolts'. Can anyone tell me whether the head of such - originally - would have been black or silver coloured?

Hi John

Original colour was Black. You see cars that have had a refurb with chrome or Silver. I ended up hand painting all of mine black. Took a while masking them all up but look much better as Factory in Black

Graham

Thanks Graham - black they will be then! (Its going to be a long job ............... !)

Porsche sell the little covers that slid over the bolts when you paint them, saves masking up!

Piggybacking off this thread.. I recently became the proud owner of a C2 Targa and absolutely love it! A childhood dream realised ??

And so the list of things to tidy up starts...

The rear O/S wheel rim bolts are corroded, presumably due to a previous refurb that wasn't finished and protected properly. The other wheels are all fine. Note, the bolts on all wheels are silver and not black!

Does anyone know if replacement rim bolts are available anywhere? I can't seem to find anything on Google. Besides the cosmetics, I am concerned the corrosion over time may become an issue for the integrity of the wheel. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Aaron

Thanks for the suggestion. They were quick to reply but unfortunately they don't have those bolts. They suggested I remove a bolt to get the measurements so they can see if they have something similar. I'll give that a go, hopefully they do... In the meantime, if anyone else has any other suggestions please let me know!

Cheers,
Aaron

Thanks to everyone for their contribution on the topic of replacement original spec rimbolts (the hunt for which is gradually driving me bonkers!) I think I have just about sourced a UK-based supplier! More on this shortly.
In the meantime I have further associated rimbolt-related questions:
> is the shank diameter 8mm (M8 would be the technical reference) or M7?
> is the shank fully threaded, or is the area immediately below the head non-threaded (and if so, what is the measurement of this non-threaded area)?

With thanks for Members' ongoing interest,
John

I'm sure there'll be many fingers crossed for good news, John! Whoever they are, they could make a small fortune from global Targa drivers!

I found this on Rennlist in my quest to find replacements. Drawn by someone who removed the bolts.
Let us know how you get on! We hope for the best!

Thanks,
Aaron

Thanks very much Aaron - the drawing and photo images were both extremely helpful!

The manufacturing source can make - to special order - rimscrews which will exactly match the original spec.. I'm waiting to hear at what sort of cost/min order/timescales this might require. When all is all a little more 'definite' I shall advise further.

Cheers, John

Hi John

I've been told these are available in motorsport industry but never followed up on it
Would be interested in a set if costs aren't silly

Graham

Hi Graham - I should be in a position to advise re costs within the next few days (allowing for the Bank Holiday). I've asked for prices of stainless steel and also zinc-coated high tensile steel along with the appropriate flanged nut.

Hello Graham-S (post 12 above) - if you wanted to send me an email as per my address at 15 above, I could fill you in on the present (successful, I believe) position.

John

John - Did you manage to source bolts - if so from where? Also could you confirm what the spec was (M7/8/length/metallurgy etc)? I have previously gone to this shop but not sure if they have the spec you need. www.accu.co.uk

Hello Shootetm - apologies for the delay in responding. By special order, I obtained from Accu, 100 x M8 25mm partially threaded, hex socket, button-head screws - in zinc coated grade 8.8 high tensile steel (plus 100 M8 flanged hexagon nuts to the same spec). They come in a silky silver finish which I prefer - but the purists would say that they should be black. Titaniums (again to special order) may be non-silver, but probably at substantial cost. I found Accu (Dean Sladen; Applications Engineer) most helpful.

At this time, I haven't split my alloys for refurbing; I'm waiting to do so when I also need to replace the tyres.

Hope this helps, John

Hi

This is really useful. Inspired by your thread I'm about to embark on the same thing and so all advice is very welcome. The only difference is that I'm going for black nickel plating (again from Accu) just as a personal taste.
Did you find the original bolt material spec from porsche? I saw the other thread on torque settings, have you settled on 20nm?
Any other thoughts? Are the nuts nylock or loctited?
Our thinking was to replace the bolts one by one without splitting the wheels

Steve
