Missing engine bay ducting ?

Hi everyone one , thanks for welcoming me to your 911sc group, whilst I have owned various Porsches over the past 15 years or so I have never ventured into the air cooled section of Porsche ownership. I have just purchased a 1980 911sc targa which needs some love and attention. I am ok with all mechanical items but their seems to be some parts missing in the engine bay, I think is was may be a motor and some ducting for cabin cooling, is this a common item to be removed and if so what are your views on reinstalling the items , should I be able to find them

Hi David. Congrats on your new purchase. RosePassion, Design 911 and others have exploded parts diagrams on their websites you could refer to. Alternatively post a pic up and I'm sure someone will be along to assist with technical advice and lety you know what you're missing.

Welcome, and hope you enjoy the SC - got a Targa myself

The most visual ducting under the engine hood are two cardboard like tubes - they're in your face so to speak. They connect back to a black plastic T piece duct on the left - which is then fixed direct onto a blower motor. All of these components are the HOT air for the cabin. They take air off the side if the huge engine fan and split this cold air via cardboard ducts to each of the exhaust HEAT EXHACHANGERS to warm the air that's then sent down the sills to the front of the car.


If someone's fitted a sport exhaust without heat exchangers then all this ducting would be pointless and possibly removed?

Possibly worth working backwards from the exhaust to determine any reason for a possible "delete" as opposed to just "missing"

Fresh air is all dealt with in a parallel system and blower motor under the front hood and behind the cardboard bulkhead panel

Picture hopefully attached - my ducts disconnected while I removed the motor for access to cold start injector.

They would all be removed if it was back dated. You will still have heating!

The 'does it look like this' picture above is the backdated version which does not have an electric fan. The finger you are pointing at
is the holder bracket for the electric fan. You do not show the right side of the engine to see if it has been backdated or is left unconnected.
Usually on the SC both sides go to the electric fan output with the unconnected part you are pointing at going to the fan input.
Fans are quick expensive new. Perhaps find a 2nd hand part or go for the backdate option which will be cheaper.

Thanks Rob, I think everything has been removed, I can see a wiring loom plug in that area which I assume connected to the fan, I think I am going to keep looking until I am 100% certain what I need, I appreciate your reply. Regards Dave

Hi, here is a pic of SC engine bay.
On this one the air pump is still present - on the left, so where your finger is pointing on your pic is just behind that pump and you can see the black plastic hoes that goes up to the fan.
