S2 AFM

Morning all, have had an issue identified with the AFM being worn on my S2 - currently reeling at replacement costs.

I've seen a few clips about MAF upgrades on the 8v engines but nothing for 16v? Or is there a simple & economical repair. Hope so as this could really dent the paint budget!

I have a SciVision kit for my turbo, which was also available in S2 flavour back in the day but sadly long discontinued unless you stumble across one. It's essentially a Bosch HM5 hot film MAF sensor (cheap as chips now) and a little wiring harness to adapt the MAF signal to an AFM signal that the ECU recognises. In theory you would just need to find the little loom and electrickary box and by a new HM5.

Your other option is replacing your ECU with something like Augment Automotive system but not cheap when you're done.

The Augmenot ECU started off as great value for money, then everything that made it different to the factory setup ended up becoming an add on extra so it worked out at twice the starting price. Then the whole shebang got more expensive hence I went with VEMS that included everything on my wishlist at a far more reasonable price.

There is a company that advertises on ebay that do a service of the AFM (no connection) -
AIRFLOW METER REMANUFACTURE SERVICE BOSCH PORSCHE 944 1985-1992, 0280 203 026 | eBay

Also a lot of used ones for sale...

Alternatively you can try and fix it by moving the wiper spring to an unworn section of track -

I completely tested mine using the test procedure and a 9v battery, I had a dead spot but after cleaning the track it was fine.

And whatever you do don’t feck with the spring

i have two that you can have cheap as they are condition unknown

Thanks gents, car is in with RPM in Knaresboro for cam belts etc so hopefully they’ll be able to sort economically. The rebuild option may be useful for future reference.
