Hi All, thought I'd share this recent experience as it may help (apologies to those who already knew!):
I was recently on my way to Caffeine & Machine when a high pitched squeal, sounding like a squealing belt, started from the engine bay. I was a good way into my journey, car was fully warmed up (properly...), bit embarrassing as I pulled into C&M on air cooled night with a squealing 997 [
]. Looked in the back with engine running, nothing obvious - belt looked fine. On way back same thing - when car thoroughly warmed the sound was back!! Did a bit of Googling and search suggested possibly belt slip or idler pulley bearing dried out. Took it to my local specialist (Paul at PMR Porsche in Feckenham, Redditch), he walked straight to the car, popped the back and said "yep I know what that is - failed oil separator", he then showed me how to tell - with engine running he opened up the oil filler cap and there was a vacuum, he had to force it off. He also stopped and re-started the engine to demonstrate the oil filler tube contracting as the vacuum built up. New separator being installed with a lot of top engine parts to be removed to locate as is it sits deep in the back.....
