Which shifter

I have already fitted a factory short shift kit to my SSE and the performance is less than I expected so I'm going to get an aftermarket set up, the choice being either a JWest Rennshifter or the Wevo type. Has anyone any recommendations or comments? BTW the box is a '86 915.

1986 alum case 915 box, 3.2 engine.

I too tried the works short shift, horrible!
Then tried another semi modified type, better, but too tight for easy road car use.
Then to the Rennshift which I've had for 5 years in my early 911.
Best by far, but have it set for the least change toshift movement.
If you reduce the lever movement the effort will rise sharply.
In fact, I lengthened the lever by 50mm 4 years ago, so much better for busy road driving.

In all these mods do not expect a 915 to shift like a new AUDI, it will still be ponderous.
Accurate adjustment is key, and the box needs to be in good condition too.

hope this helps.

Good choice imho. You simply remove your standard shifter complete (and keep it) and drop the Rennshift in. The fitting is easy, the adjustment is also good but do follow the instructions.
Look forwards to your feed-back.

Bit of a late reply but the Rennspeed shifter works a treat in the 911 so much so I bought one for my wee beastie 356 but of course it didn't fit directly and I knew I would have to do a few mods to get it working right. There are three bolts holding the shifter similar to the 356 and although the front two line up spot on the rear does not. Also on a trial fit I noticed that the Rennspeed shifter would sit slightly higher that the 356 position. This turned out to be not a great problem as I had a Willhoit base plate fitted under my old 356 shifter, so I simply marked the new rear bolt position on this base plate, drilled and tapped it M8 1.25 and voila everything bolts up perfectly after I had chopped the shift rod aprox 3cms and filed a notch for the clamp bolt. Although I couldn't road test the car as I'm in the process of pulling the engine and trans out for re-builds the shifting function with my new slightly raised Rennspeed shifter seemed very good indeed.

With the shifter business sorted I pulled the engine and gearbox out after noting and labelling all the hook ups. I cleaned the transmission ready to send off for a new diff ratio, new fifth gear bearing and a general checkover and then started to partially strip the engine. I'm at something of a crossroads here because I don't know whether to go hunt down a good 3.2 or rebuild my 2.4 with 2.7 barrels and pistons. Even if I can find a 3.2, and they are certainly very hard to find, I think it would be unwise not to have a good look at the state of the engine and with that in mind would I just be better off giving the 2.4 a complete refresh. Decisions, decisions.

I found a 3.2 engine that actually wasn't for sale, it's due to go into some project, and after checking it over I found it to be dimensionaly slightly larger than my 2.4. Not a great deal, just centimetres but my 2.4 is such a tight squeeze in the 356 that I wouldn't want to go to the trouble of fitting up a 3.2 only to find it would be a no go into my car. So decision time over, I'm going to rebuild my 2.4. OK it will be much more expenditure but I will have the knowledge that I have a new engine with hopefully a fair bit more power. The shopping list is 2.7 barrels and hi comp pistons to bring the squeeze up a couple of points, a set of Wossner rods so I can rev it to 8 and some Kent G60 cams. I would like the heads tricked up a bit and I shall take some advice whether or not larger valves would be a good idea. The gearbox will be on its way up north at the end of this week so it's all starting to happen.

Not sure if this helps, but I think you are also on DDK?
My 73T lost it's 2.4 decades ago, and I fitted a stock 3.2 and 915 box, all bolts to the original mountings in the shell.

I have just rebuilt another 3.2 for my hillclimb car, and well documented here in Modified and DDK too.

The 3.2 heads have the largest valves for full flow which you will want at 8K and those cams!
