1996 993 C2 liquid "gurgling" sound

Understanding, of course, that my 993 is aircooled - I have recently heard a noise that can best be described as the sound of running liquid (gurgling) which I sense is coming from the forward front/right-hand side of the car. Other than oil being pumped around (is the oil cooler out front?) might this be something to do with the aircon system? The noise is noticeable when coasting along at low speed (hardly any engine/wind/road noise).

Any and all thoughts would be welcomed.

Many thanks, John

Yes, this is the sound of the oil gurgling which you sometimes get, normal, usually. Oil cooler upfront on the driver’s side (RHD)... you can hear the oil passing along to the oil cooler. Always worth taking a look around the area if you think it’s excessive, to check nothing amiss.

Maybe it’d been a while since you drove your 993 and had forgotten this? [;)]
Only say this as many are not driven enough, especially in these colder months [:)]

Oil cooler front offside. Comes into play when the temp gauge gets past 9 o'clock when the thermostat opens up. Quite a travel distance from there to the engine.

Doesn’t this completely debunk the "air cooled” myths once and for all then - can we all finally agree on "oil cooled” :ROFLMAO:

There are rather too many cooling fins about for such a rash assertion .. not to mention a big fan and associated ducting ! [8|]

How else are you going to cool the oil down? :ROFLMAO:

My personal take is that the true "air cooled" engines died off decades ago and the use of either oil or water to cool the block is splitting hairs. I can understand why Porsche (and subsequently Porsche owners) utilised the ”air-cooled" moniker as a mark of heritage and differentiation.
The M96 may have been a redesigned engine but the radiator and cooling pipe arrangement on the 996 is fundamentally the same as that on a 993 however much the owners may protest.

‘Aircooled’ or ‘oil cooled’, doesn’t really matter [8|]... bit of both I’d say.

As long as the original posted question gets a helpful answer [;)]

Many thanks for helpful answers to my 'gurgling' question .... and to other forum commentators (ref the appropriate descriptor for cooling of oil in a 993)

Hi there. I've been a bit if a lurker

So this car isn't a pioneer of ground effect fan like the F1 Brabham and the recent record breaker for the Goodwood?
??

More seriously is there any objective stats on how much cooling % is the oil circulating to the radiator Vs the fan over the engine block?

Thanks
Chris

Well, seeing how long they take to warm up the oil, I would suggest 10% for air, 90% for oil. This will vary in different climates and with the bloody global bleeding warming !!

We're all gonna die !!

cheers, Maurice
