Hi All

ive had my 911 SC for approaching 12 months and have to say I absolutely love it, any excuse to get out in it I take.

im slightly embarrassed to say though I still find the whole heater controls on the dashboard and centre tunnel a complete mystery and tend to get warm air directed at my feet and cool air through the vents, even though the dial wheel between passenger and driver seat is set to nil / blue.

im finding even in late teens temperatures it becomes really too hot on your feet even with the sunroof and window open.

im sure it’s a stupid question, but what setting would you use to get optimum cool air into the cabin, avoiding The hot air on my feet, the car doesn’t have air con and is a 1982 sc.

any guidance would be really appreciated
 
Are you sure the heater boxes aren't siezed?

I had a Targa that had the heating on all the time. Turned out the flaps on the heater boxes were siezed so I couldn't turn the heat off regardless of the control settings - great in the winter, though...

Common problem on early 911s, so I was told and have read since.
 
Just in case you haven't seen this before search for '911 heating diagram' on the 'net and it should take you to Pelican Parts.


There are a number of diagrams on there of the 911 including one on how the heater system works; it might be that you haven't got the settings properly adjusted.
 
I have always had the same problem with my 81 SC Targa. When I had the engine rebuilt, I had the heater boxes replaced. It made very little difference as I still get very toasty feet all year round. It’s not often you can say this about Porsche, but it’s basically a bad design.


After 15 years of owning it, I still get a bit confused with how to control the heater / air. I occasionally need to refer to the diagram on the inside of the glove compartment door. Have you got that? I must say it doesn’t always help much though. It’s actually a testament to another bit of questionable design if they needed to give you a permanently accessible diagram in order to work the heater! ??
 
If you push the red knob on the dashboard to the right it should deflect the heat to the windscreen. If not the wire may have come off the control to the flaps. Taking the black cover off from underneath the front bonnet you can see what is going on. If your heater boxes have been replaced and adjusted correctly the motor under the dial wheel may be broken. Moving the dial wheel you should hear it moving. I have removed the dial wheel in my SC and have manual control.

 
You aren't alone.
I owned a 911 SC from new for around 5 years and never did master those heater controls. [:mad:]
