Replacing Transmission

Hi,

I have an issue with my diff/transmission.

I noticed a very faint whistling sound (like a final spin cycle on a washing machine) on acceleration (and reverse). The garage opened up the transmission and the transmission oil was apparently very smelly (of gas)/ burnt out and the bearings weren't the best on the diff. The oil was replaced and additive added and the car has come back with a much louder whistling sound... Apparently the diff will eventually need replaced (and this cant be done individually, has to be with the transmission). Which I'm happy to do. The problem I have is that the garage owner told me the outcome isn't guaranteed - that the transmission is a sensitive beast and may not be like it was before.

I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and what the outcome was. Is replacing with a second hand transmission workable? I'd really appreciate any advice.

Many thanks for reading.

Bryn

From my very recent experience of gearbox problems, I would suggest you consult a specialist, i.e. a Gearbox specialist, particularly for your Porsche.

You do not mention when the oil has been changed, how long you have had the car, what mileage the car has covered, any other problems, etc - this is all very relevant to determining the next stage to be worried about (I know this specifically), but most things can be brought to a good conclusion.

PS presume this is a manual box too, as you don’t say?

Thanks for your reply. The car has done 63,000 miles. I;ve had it for a year and have no idea if the transmission il has been changed in the past. IT;s an automatic gearbox. Do you know of a good gearbox specialist in or around London?

Many thanks,

Bryn

Unfortunately not personally for auto. Take a look at the latter pages in Porsche Post adverts... still worth asking a specialist... Good luck.

Bryn,

If your transmission is Tiptronic rather than PDK I’m sure that any conventional auto-transmission specialist should be able to help you, and parts actually may be available. I can’t help with recommendations, but if you Google "Auto transmission specialist London” there are quite a few places you could try contacting, although they may not have Porsche-specific experience.
