Hi. I have a Boxter S. The 3.2 ltr with this noise coming from what I "think" is a belt.. ? Videos links added here.
1 with it idling and 1 moving.

Can anyone tell me which belt or part it is before I have to take most of the inside car apart, seats out etc ?
Hopefully you can tell from the noise. It makes more noise the higher the revs.

Appreciated if you know / can advise.

Thanks

Just my thoughts, I don't think that is a belt.

My initial bet would be something like water pump or alternator. or anything with a rotating bearing.

However!

Best try the simplest stuff first and change the belt.

You can feel the bearings of the parts being driven by the belt while it is off. All ancillaries should be smooth and quiet when rotated by hand, no play.

Alternatively, ask a good indie for their opinion and if you are a DIY man, by the parts off them.

I stand to be corrected.

I’d agree that it sounds more like an alternator whine to me.

You need to pull off the panel behind the seats to get access to the belt and ancillaries. There’s no need to remove the seats; just move them forward as much as possible.

If you look online there’s bound to be a video showing the procedure to remove the panel. You’ll then be in a position to hear the noise better to establish what’s causing it.

Ah ok. Thanks.. I saw a video of someone checking and changing something there and he had the seats out, so presumed that was the situation.

Didn't realise it was possible to see and perhaps do something without.

Great job on the noise recordings BTW. Most people looking for help with noises manage to record unwanted noise more effectively than the one they want help with!

Did you find the problem?

Does it go away when you turn the AC off? Or do you have any other symptoms, such as heavy steering, poor battery charging, etc?

I agree it is most likely to be a bearing, hopefully on your auxiliary drive as most components are relatively straightforward to replace. Try removing the belt and running the engine without. You only need to repeat the idle test long enough to see if the noise is still present (remember the water pump won't be running!). If the noise goes away then:

[ul][*]Check play and rotational feel of each pulley to see if any of the bearings are shot/noisy; so that's AC compressor, PAS pump, alternator, water pump and idlers/tensioner[*]Replace the belt and run the engine again[*]Using a mechanics stethoscope (cheap on Amazon) to listen to the running bearing to home in on anything bad - being careful not to get caught up in the belt!![/ul]Given the intensity of the noise in your clips, I'd say you should find the fault fairly quickly.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the info and suggestions there Coz - I appreciate it.

Still just waiting for the right time to get this little task done. I will get a belt to replace anyway and then see from your suggestions what pulley or whatever it might be and replace that/

I had a quick look but could not tell easily, but it did seem to be one of them so should be an easy enough fix at a low cost.

Cheers.

All sorted. Sold the car so not an issue now. I suspect it will be either a live with it investigate and fix as per list attached here.

Thanks for the advice peoples.
