Cayman 718 - Steering Wheel Controls not working after dead battery

Hello,

I have a Cayman S 718, 2016.

My battery died and jump started it. After which I had a PSM error - which I think should be cleared from an extended drive having read up a little - this seems common. However, I had to abort that after realising I had no steering wheel controls (indicators, horn, wipers etc). I've since changed the battery incase the low charge was the cause, and I still have the same issues. I can't drive it - as its too dangerous without indicators etc.

I have checked fuses, all seem intact, there's no water damage within the car.

Would anyone have any idea what may have caused this? I don't have warranty, so I'm hoping its something simple and cheap!

Any advice would be super appreciated. Thank you

That’s very odd … not heard of that before. I can only suggest that you disconnect the battery and try again. I don’t know the correct procedure for your 718 (maybe have a look online?) but on the earlier cars it’s necessary to have the key in the ignition before disconnecting and reconnecting the battery to prevent the alarm being triggered.

Here’s a link applicable for the 987 but which you may find useful:

It could be that the system’s gone into some sort of strange delivery mode, in which case it’ll be necessary to get a PIWIS or equivalent diagnostic system involved.

Thank you for the reply Jeff, really appreciated. So prior to changing the battery I did go through many disconnections of the OG battery and tests to see if the controls came back. Granted I haven't done this with the new battery, though my hunch is this won't make a difference. Coincidently I've found that exact link you provided, and tried a couple of the items. No joy so far, though I'll re-read and check through these items. The annoyance is that without indicators, I likely need to get a recovery truck to take for further diagnosistics, as my nearest specialist or porsche garage is some 30 mins away. I dont know if this info makes a difference, but I had to release the key from the lock, after the initial effort to start the car failed and the key locked into the ignition. On using the tool in the fuse box to release the cover on the lock reset button, this snapped the plastic pin holders, the reset was sucessful, but I can't re-add the cover. I also moved the steering wheel position to gain easier access to the fuse box for the frunk opening steps when there was no battery. I've played about with that steering wheel positioning, and tried the manual steps on steering wheel angles in the link you'd provided. I barely drive the car sadly, as I dont get the chance, so was planning to sell it - I cancelled an sales appointment just 3 months ago, as I didn't want to part with it - now wishing perhaps I had! Argg! Without the battery issue - would anyone know the normal cause of failure of all steering wheel controls? for example no indicators, but hazard button works, no volume control, but the radio/music centre works etc. Thank you.

I wouldn’t think that the key issue would have any bearing on your problem, but who knows?

Modern cars use CAN bus systems with numerous electronic modules and it’s possible that the steering wheel controls are linked to one which has failed. Unfortunately I’m guessing that you’re going to need the assistance of some diagnostics to sort out your problem.

Thank you very much for replying again! I'll do some more googling - and bite the bullet on specialist help if this doesn't help.
