Another Cayman

I have sold my GT3, with 3 OPC’s bidding I got £9k more than I paid 10 months and c5k miles ago, such is the appetite for stock. I'll obviously miss the engine, (did I mention the engine?), that special PDK, learning a different track driving style and the theatre of the car. Still I got in 8 track days and a great deal of enjoyment from the car.

I had intended keeping it for another year but the offer late Christmas week of a February build GT4 was a temptation too far. One background consideration was insurance brokers getting a little sniffy at me being on my 3rd 3 year licence renewal, anyway I'm back into a GT4. I didn't really bond with the first one, it was a first manual in >20 years, same colour (white) as my custom build 981 3.8L Carerra engined PDK Cayman, and really didn't excite me that much. The GT3 of course was an entirely new and brilliant experience, but was always going to be for a limited ownership period. The new GT4 is the same spec as my first one! - except this one is PDK, has a reversing camera and in Shark Blue so I'll see how much a different colour and PDK make.

Looks nice though.

...and to think I always had white or silver in the past - mind you I am somewhat colour blind!

I am hoping the build schedule does not move backwards with track days already booked. I don't understand why it would be routed via Kornwestheim (Stuttgart area) if built at Osnabrück but I guess either built at Stuttgart (unlikely) or Kornwestheim is a logical but non-physical staging area in the Porsche production system.

It's going to Topaz for prep, PPF and ceramic coating because if it has anything, it has the colour. I expect hope to be on the road by March 31st, have it run in within a week, suspension set up week 2 and on track mid-April - we shall see.

I'll keep it stock save for PFC pads and JCR noise reduction exhaust tips. I'll use the pads from the GT3 and the GT3 tips are up for sale. If anyone in the South West needs 8L of Mobile 1 0W-40 oil at a good price for an oil change on a pre-OPF car, send me a PM.

Welcome back to Cayman-land Ralph, although those of us attending the post-Christmas Register Zoom meeting already had prior notice.

An excellent colour choice I have to say, and with the new engine and PDK it and should be a step-up from the 981 GT4.

Hope the delivery process goes smoothly and to schedule, although nothing’s guaranteed right now. I think all the cars go via Kornwestheim before shipment (maybe it’s for a final check?), although it seems rather odd given that they then have to be shipped north again to the port of dispatch.

Keep us posted on progress.

Jeff

Ralph,

Excellent colour choice, and I'll be interested to learn how the GT4 PDK compares to your GT3 PDK experiences.

I sympathise with your 3 year licence renewals, I am in the same boat so to speak with my DVLA licence renewal coming up in April.

Keep us posted on your delivery schedule and first impressions.

Brian

Nice spec, no idea how one can go backwards from the 991.2 engine though.

Mine now seems worth £160k but what would I swap it for even if I sold it ?

you will still need adjustable rear toe links on the 718 GT4 if you want to see track and work as it can do :-(

you won't need "noise reduction exhaust tips" on the 718 GT4 imo.

hope to see it around, great colour choice.

Centre Gravity setup my manual GT4 for track with standard hardware and it ran well with even tyre temps across the tread and no shoulder wear. It had good change of direction through my benchmark sequence of Becketts, Maggotts, Chapel so maybe I’m getting smoother in my advanced years. We’ll see how close I can get to my best GT3 time at Silverstone.

On the subject of noise, I had a noise warning at Goodwood (98dB static/96dB drive by day) in my manual GT4 from the Madgewick/Fordwater meter and I want to run at Thruxton where there is a 90dB static (no drive by) limit, hence the noise reduction tips.

Wow, and congrats Ralph. Very interesting step, so look forward to reading your comparisons.

Shark Blue looks nice on the GT4.. here is a pic of me with a friend at Silverstone last year.

What was your PB in the GT3 in the end?

T, I don’t think I’ll get down to your 2:26, IIRC. The best in the GT3 was 2:29 so I need to find another 7 seconds from my best manual GT4 time.

Are you any closer to going the other way?

You’ll have some fun in the PDK GT4 then.. back to familiar territory, I do find it interesting that both you and ChrisW have reverted back to GT4 after sampling the GT3.

As for me, my logged data suggests I have another c1.5s of time for a optimal lap with my best sectors from the end of last season… to the key will be putting it together, as ever. Not sure how much I’ll get out to Silverstone this year yet though as they have predominantly taken track days in house… I’m booked onto the PCGB days and will have a look around for others.

Really want to get back to Goodwood a few times this year having not driven there since 2019.

Lotus on Track have two Silverstone days, Silverstone have just 12. I haven’t seen any other organisers’ Silverstone days other than PCGB and LoT so what is the track to be used for?

Thruxton is taking up some of the market with many more days than previously. With my JCR tips I should be able run on Goodwood 98dB days at full tilt without tripping the Madgewick/Fordwater noise meter and pass Thruxton‘s 90dB static test.

Great to see you back in a 718 Ralph.

My current Cayman is a Stuttgart built car and according to the Porsche newsroom, all 2 door sports car production moved back to Stuttgart in August 2016 when the 981, which was built at Osnabrück, was phased out. I'm under the impression that Kornwestheim is a holding facility until they have space and logistics to put them into Emden.

It'll look amazing when it arrives.

Dan

Dan,

Although 718 Cayman production initially was transferred to Stuttgart I’m pretty sure that owing to high demand for 911s some/all production was moved back to Osnabrück, and as far as I know that still remains the case … although who knows what’s happening ATM with all the parts supply problems? Boxsters are built on the Stuttgart line and maybe the F-6 engined Caymans are also built there?

Like you I reckon Kornwestheim is some sort of holding/inspection facility, but if cars are still being built in Osnabrück it does seem odd that they’re shipped a long way south only to be shipped north again to Emden. Doesn’t smack of the famed German efficiency! 😀

Jeff

Production factory varies, Dan, that press release is out of date. My early 2020 718 GT4 is an Osnabruck car, OliR's late 2020 version is a Stuttgart car.

In some ways I suppose you could argue that Osnabrück-built cars should be more consistent than those built at Stuttgart because it’s a dedicated Cayman line, whereas the Stuttgart line operatives are building Boxsters, Caymans and all the 911 variants. [;)]

Jeff

Hi Ralph

it’s been a while! ( Silverstone last year I think ?) congratulations on the new GT4 looks fab

Tony

Started a week late, but catching up on the inside..

Ordering some JCR exhaust bits to reduce the noise so I can run at Thruxton with its 90dB static test, my first one stock exhaust was 92dB.

First track day April 25 Castle Combe, Center Gravity 29th, then Goodwood May 4 and Thruxton May 5, I have another 9 booked.
