Anyone recognise this rally car?

Fond memories of that car, which I built in my lockup garage at home. [:D]

It successfully competed in the 1986 Lombard RAC and the Ulster International Rally as well as a number of regional and national events. It had outrights wins against more powerful machinery including the Audi Quattro and Metro 6R4.

It was easy to drive having a long wheel base and double wishbone suspension affording great directional stability.

In those days, the RAC was a gruelling 5 day World Championship event covering all 3 home countries and finishing well was a great feather in the cap of our small amateur team. The Ulster Rally was based in Belfast at the height of "The Troubles" and rally HQ was the Europa, the most bombed hotel in Europe at the time! We were advised to use an Irish registered car for the reccie as it would have been dangerous to drive an English car in some areas.

Ultimately, the Opel Manta 400, as a Group B car was banned from international rallying at the end of 1986 and I drove a Lancia Delta HF 4WD the following year on the RAC. This outing was somewhat less successful as the car hydrauliced its engine in a dammed up river ford on Stage 3 (Weston Park). My sponsors, Croyde Holiday Park were delighted however, as the car with their name on the side, was featured in the opening and closing credits of BBC Top Gear reports for the rest of the week!
