993 Targa corrosion on body roof join

Hi Everyone

Looking for any experience owners have with corrosion coming through where the rood and body meet at the rear of the 993 Targa.

I've got the start of corrosion pushing through on the left rear body work of my 1996 Targa and I suspect fixing it is a complex and therefore costly job.

Interested to see what experience people have had with this, appreciating that this might just be the tip of a larger issue.

Tahnks.

Rob

Got similar on my 1998 Targa. I'm sure you're right very expensive to fix, so I just keep it waxed and WD40'd and figure at my age (72) it's not my problem.

Son Tom will sort it when he gets the car. [:)]

We also have a 1998 Targa - I read (pistonheads thread "993 Production numbers") that only 10 RHD were made (4 manual, 6 tip) in 1998 so pretty exclusive :) Also part of the not-so-exclusive bubbling paintwork club. In our case, we got the car with some bubbling in the scuttle. I've had quotes in the 2.5-4.5K range to rectify this. Not helped by the bonded screen which I'm told may crack when it comes off (although that may not be an issue if the bubbling is at the back of the car).

Hi Rob, I am seeing similar - all be it on the offside. When pulling back the rubber gasket, I can see where the paint has rubbed off and the corrosion started. I have made some casual enquiries. Seems various possible reasons and various possible remedies. Suggestions of having to partly remove the roof bar - yikes - to partially easing the wing and roof bar partly apart... The wing, roof bar and rear cross bar would also all need to be blended in if properly painting after treatment hence it does become a rather big job.
Suggests it's better to attempt to treat in the immediate term to minimise any spread. Then consider the bigger picture of painting the wings / arches when they would benefit at a later date.
Good to hear if you have / do pursue any avenues...

In speaking to other owners, it seems to be a common problem. A function of a complex roof, with a number of seals that over time, allow some leakage to occur.

I've spoken with one specialista nd they've given me a very professional answer and I don't doudt their view, I will look to get a second view point and report back.
