Matt Staines and the R5 organising committee have managed to put on a wide and varied programme of events for North West Members despite the many challenges associated with the C-19 Pandemic In 2021.

We are in the process of preparing another full and varied programme for next year and with this in mind would welcome your thoughts on what you would like to do in 2022 and your views on events and activities that we hosted over the last year.

Please let us know what you enjoyed, what you didn’t like and what you would like to do that we haven't done before.

Only with your input can we be sure that we are putting on the events and activities that you really want.

Your comments and feedback would be very much appreciated, so do please join in the discussion and comment below.

Yours,

Martin

Hi Martin [:D]

I think the variety of events this year has been great - there really has been something for everyone so a big thanks from me to all for what they've done.

I'm really into racing, tech stuff and modern cars, so for me a trip to a geo place to see what's involved in adjusting and setting up camber, toe, ride height etc would be really interesting. Along those lines, if there's a race car workshop somewhere that could go through car prep and adjustments that would also be cool? And/or an engine builders?

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your speedy response, we are keen to try and generate more communication and engagement from members on the forum pages and your input this year has really been appreciated.

We will look into trying to arrange some more tech related visits particularly with regard to geo / suspension set up’s and engine re build specialists.

If any R5 members reading this have any regional contacts that specialise in any of these areas, do please let me know.

Cheers,

Martin

Off the top of my head we've got Suspension Secrets for geo stuff in Knutsford, and Ninemeister in Warrington do geo and engine rebuild work along with Sports and Classic in Macclesfield. Slightly further afield there's Hartech in Bolton for engine work...

Thank you Dave for this, we will make contact with these specialists and some others. Do you have any specific contacts that you could share with me?

Many thanks,

Martin

Mike is the boss at Sports and Classic and for Hartech, the boss is called Baz but I've never used either of them so can't introduce you I'm afraid. Same for Suspension Secrets, I don't know anyone there. Sorry,

However Pete is the guy to speak to at Ninemeister for sure. Tell him I sent you, or let me know if you want me to give him a call on your behalf?

I have just sent an email to Suspension Secrets, a number of people have mentioned them to me. We will also approach the others that you have suggested.
Given that you know Pete at Ninemeister, would you mind mentioning it to him and introducing me?
Many thanks,
Martin

No worries - I'll get in touch with him now. I'll drop you a message once I've spoken to him [:)]

I know 9m has been visited by R5 before, so I'd suggest a focus on more modern cars this time - water-cooled stuff, GT products, the new turbo engine cars etc. That would make it different and possibly engage a different audience? I'm happy to volunteer my car for the ramps if you want them to talk through how my exhaust was conceived and developed and the challenges with OPF cars?

Just a thought [:D]

I've already responded to your Q on the Whatsapp group Martin but in addition, how about a dyno day?

Dan.

Thank you Dan,
Sounds interesting, I’ve not been to one one of these before.
Do you know any firms that do this in our area?
If so I will do some digging.
Cheers,
Martin

Apologies for the late reply Martin.

The only ones I can think of off the top of my hear are Awesome GTI in Irlam and Lohen in Stafford.

I've used Lohen before and although they are MINI specialists, they will do dyno runs for any make.

Thanks Dan,

We’ll look into it and see what we can do.

Are you joining us at the club night on Wednesday or in the Lakes on Saturday or Sunday?

Cheers,

Martin

Can't make the club night I'm afraid as in work at 0400 on Thursday and I'll be at Ribby Hall with a 911 courtesy of PC Preston on the Lakes run. Saying that, I may see if the wife is happy for us to tag along at the start until we need to get to the hotel. I'll let you know if we can make it.

Great stuff already going on in R5 but here are a few of our thoughts on events:
1 - Social events like WOTYs, Sunday lunches etc are always welcome particularly if it's in a new location and is designed to get people meeting new folks. The Palmyra event was great but too many tables for 2 limited new introductions. WOTYs seem to work best over at least 3 nights (people can extend if they want more) with everyone in the same place - apologies can't do the R5 WOTY due to prior commitment. Will have done 3 WOTYs with other regions this year - a great way of meeting old friends and new PCGB folks all with at least one common interest, and driving lots of fabulous UK miles.
2 - Club nights with an interesting speaker, provided the facilities and environment make it practical rather than some poor person mumbling in a corner whilst everyone else in the venue gets on noisily with their life/meal/clattering about/whatever.
3 - Drives out to an interesting/unusual venue always good, especially with an organised group tour. Doesn't have to be engineering-related but factories (eg JCB), historic locations (Papplewick Pumping Station?, Barrow Hill Roundhouse? - never been to either, etc) are the sort of thing in mind. Must be lots of those about.
4 - Very local to me in Bakewell, Mellors Elliot Motorsport (see https://www.mellorselliotmotorsport.com/) are progressing their Cayman S-based 914 restomod (see https://www.hagerty.com/media/news/this-porsche-914-has-the-heart-of-a-cayman/). I was there today getting my 981 MOT'd and enquired. They have just had the moulds made for the carbon fibre doors and though very busy on other projects (such as a restoration of an Alan Jones F1 car) said by about Jan they could be in a position to talk about hosting a visit if we are interested. I will keep in touch with them if you like.

All the best.

One last one for you Martin. ProDrive in Banbury. The factory tour of the rally cars and their museum is pretty good.

Dan.

Look forward to seeing you again soon.
