Heat inside the cabin - 1989 Turbo

First post here, so please be kind. I have new to me 1989 turbo in great mechanical condition and learning its niggles/characteristics. One particular niggle is knowing whether thee amount of heat coming into the cabin through the air vents and in the passenger well is normal or something else that needs to be looked into.

Heat is always present, but comes on most after boost has been triggered. The fan has been replaced recently and does bring in cool, outside air but is obviously mixing with the engine heat so at best it is warmish coming into the cabin

It feels hottest on the passenger side and in the picture below, the circled area is extremely hot to the touch after a short journey.

Just keen to get any info on what is normal on these cars.

I have a 79 930 with the same behavior. I've looked under the car and the cable operated valves which should shut off the air coming off the heat exchangers are rusted solid and stuck in the open position so no matter what the selector says there is hot air coming into the cabin. Its also the route for burning oil smell or fumes of you have oil leaking on to the heat exchangers and let's face it almost all of us do!!
 
With the boxes open you wont have any heat into the cabin, it will go to atmosphere, closed sends the heat down the sills to the cabin floor ducts
