that’s fantastic news Stu!!!! 
 
we’ll just do what i did for a bit when i put the engine in once i rebuilt it all in the garden,……i made a temporary engine building hut in the side alley ,…and had the car next to the kitchen door in the back garden,…and becuase i had to dismantle the hut i’d built ( pretty sturdy with double doors  ) untill i coukd squeeze the car back out onto my drive ,…i just sat in it for good few weeks at night and started he r up and listened to the radio  for a bit

Ha ha, yes indeed! I'll definitely start it up and run it up to temp each day I'm not fit to drive, I'll open the window though instead of the radio, and listen to the purr........
 
Need to make a plan to get it home first, it's 25 miles away, probably get my mate to drive me home in it while I monitor all the gauges.....might be driving sooner than I think if the recovery goes well. Nurse says 4-6 weeks in crutches, mate got similar op and he hobbled home that night and was walking ok within a week. See how we go.

Op went well lads. No crutches and at home fully weight bearing on leg. Hope to pick up the car before the end of the week.
 
Mate road tested it today, all good. Check levels and stuff again up on ramp tomorrow morning then good to go for run in phase.

It's always good to read about successful engine rebuilds. I think Alusil rebuilds are a thing of the past, ferrous liners or Nikasil plating seems the only way to do it without drama. I haven't had a working radio in my car for over 12 years, it has got quite a noisy exhaust though.

Well she is home! Hobbled to the train station (1K) then got 2 trains and a taxi. Went for a test drive and all good then had a natter and a cup of coffee and kicked tyres in general.
 
Engine is spot on, new starter is awesome, new aluminium rad is good, turbo aux water pump good, cup clutch is brilliant, AFR's all good, on and off boost (gently) all good, engine just feels really tight and strong. No rattles, squeaks or leaks, 50 miles down, 450 to go!
 
Time to put the leg up now for a well earned break. I'm nothing short of a walking miracle today lads!

So after paying my mate, the total cost is £8k. Fully rebuilt engine with liners, new forged pistons, MLS head gasket, valve guides, balance shaft bearings, new water pump and thermostats, oil pick up pipe strengthened. steam vent kit, new cup clutch kit, every bearing, seal and gasket replaced, new oil pump, plugs, K&N cleaned, new lifters, new starter, new ali rad, new expansion cap for brake reservoir, and many other things I won't bother listing or have forgot, couple of silicon hoses, 2nd hand coolant tank, ah give up! Lots and lots and it drives better than ever. Super happy! Lots of admirers on the way home, its been a while!!

Put another 40 miles in there, levels all good, not lost a drop of oil or water. The car has never been so good, not one single thing wrong. Absolute joy to drive. You forget how connected you feel to the car and road, unlike when driving the wife's Seat Ateca! Proper feel, sounds brilliant and engine is quiet and strong. Just generally cruising from about 65 then up to 85 then back down again on the motorway, not deploying any more then 5-10 psi and then working it up and down the gears on and off throttle on some twisty back roads. Even at that it pulls like a train, I'm sure it will be quite something once it's run in and full beans are applied! Couldn't be happier. 110 miles down, 390 to go!
 
Also today I could get in and out without moving the seat all the way back like yesterday, more good progress with my knee starting to gradually bend a bit more. All good.

Another 40 miles today, no dramas, all good. Photo of engine bay, note the turbo aux water pump with wiring mod and steam vent kit nicely installed. And exact same shade of off-white replacement coolant tank! Tidied up the wiring around the bulkhead where the original black ties had mostly snapped. New terminals onto new brake reservoir cap and all MAF wiring sorted, neat and tidy (and out of site under the MAF unit).
