Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb

Last week, three x 911 friends and I spent the day at Shelsley Walsh learning how to drive the Hill. A fantastic day and a great experience, plus the instruction was first class and made a real difference as we all progressively improved our times throughout the day.

I chose to take my 991.1 GTS on the day rather than the 992 as I feel a little more comfortable / familiar in the 991 and didn’t want to spend time thinking about the car, instead focusing solely on learning the track. As it happens this was, for me, exactly what happened and I was really pleased with my progress on the day. The point of this post is to highlight the performance difference between the 991 and the 992, which a friend of mine with the same model as me (Carrera 2 S) took to the event.

For those unfamiliar with the track, the final stretch is essentially a rising sprint for the line, the toughest parts of the course having already been negotiated. Although I was able to consistently improve my times, especially through the last technical sector (the esses) that immediately precedes the last section, I could not for the life of me get the car to break 100mph. Having gained confidence during the day, eventually I was driving in sport plus + manual modes on what was perfect track conditions, but could only reach 98mph by the time of crossing the line. On the contrary my friend with the 992 maxed out at 106mph during the final sprint, perhaps highlighting the later car’s incredible torque and acceleration. It would be easy to say he is simply a better / faster drive and was able to exit the esses quicker and earlier than me but our overall times suggested I was just as fast, if not slightly faster, on the lower half of the track.

suffice to say the whole experience was very addictive and is something I am going to look to do again next year, probably in the 992.

attached is a photo of my friend’s car captured as he makes the final dash.

The order of things has been maintained then. [;)]

Just as well too - or your friend might have been asking for his money back. [:D]

Shelsey is a delightful hill, challenging and technical in places with plenty of traps for the unwary, but very satisfying to drive. The organisers are most helpful and welcoming too. [:)]

Quite right Clive - no real surprises on the day in performance / evolution terms.

Also agree with your summary of how everything is handled, it's a really professional set up.

The venue is limited to 30 x running days each year, but I have already reached out to their events team to see if we could hold a 992 Register driving school there in 2022. For those that haven't done a hill climb before, I think they'd find it a real thrill to be ascending the course in the 911 at increasingly quicker times.

I will update everyone once we know what's possible.

Lovely, was there myself last year with a group of friends. Enjoyed the whole day, great friendly staff and instructors, nice lunch and topped off by great weather. :)
