Engine Problem - Any ideas

Hi All, I have a 2005 911 C2S. I was just driving home and then heard suddenly what I thought was a something from the back of the car... at first I thought in the wheel arch scraping/rubbing. I pulled over thinking it was the tyres, but all 4 were fine. I heard dripping from under the car and when I checked the engine oil was running out of the bottom of the engine. I was dark and so could not quite see where it was coming from exactly. I am going to get the garage to pick it up tomorrow, but would appreciate any guidance/experience the group may have.... :-(

Been towed to the garage and they have confirmed suspicion of a failed IMS. The question now is, can they save the engine? If yes its circa £10k for a rebuild.... if not its a new engine which is likley uneconomic at double the cost. Oh the heartbreak....

Thinking about my options and the cost, I might need a second opinion on the engine if possible. I live in the South East, if any one has any suggestions as to who I might go to I would be extremely grateful.

Really sorry to hear about your problem Simon.

Hartech in Bolton are probably the most experienced company dealing with this type of repair but you may want to try Autofarm who are in Oxfordshire and have a wealth of Porsche experience, although I’m sure that there are other Porsche specialists who may be able to help.

The main problem is that until the engine is stripped for examination it’s going to be impossible to define exactly what repairs are are going to be required - and therefore the cost involved - which means in effect that you’re going to have to choose your repairer at the outset.

Hope that you get something sorted.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff

Really sound advice. I spoke with Hartech late afternoon and feel you are bang on the money. I am stopping the works at my local independant in the morning and going to take it to Hartech later in the year when they have space! Hartech was another level in terms of setting confidence. Its a lot of money and so I really want to invest it in the right hands and then drive away at some point in the future feeling good that the car is sound.

It was a sad day seeing it towed away on the trailer..... hopefully all will be sorted in a coupe of months or so.

Regards

Simon

Very sorry to hear of your engine failure - My 997 is also a 2005 but appears to have had an engine change as my Engine Number is in the range that had the final larger IMS bearing and can only be checked by splitting the crankcase.

Do you know your engine number. Maybe on V5 or a OPC Invoice.

Your car seems a very well maintained example and never failed an MOT according to the .Gov website. Terrible luck.

Thanks Jeff,

I'll reach out to Jules. You have beena real help here!

Thanks JMaddox

Mine is an earlier model with the smaller (inferior) IMS (I am now an expert in the IMS, just wish I was 3 days ago! :)). My car has indeed been well loved, but sadly it seems the IMS failure that I exprienced is one of those things that happens to the 5%. I am reassuring myself that I will end up with solid car that will last me for years to come, and that the peice of mind that comes along with it is worth the considerable cost I am facing. :) Now to gather the funds.....

Gratifying to hear that I’ve been able to help Simon, albeit in a very small way. I hope that everything turns out well for you, especially since you’re planning to hold on to the car for a long time which will make the expenditure more palatable.

Keep us posted on progress.

Jeff

Thanks for the reply. I hope you are back on the road again soon. I will admit I am a bit nervous now about driving mine to Goodwood Revival this weekend -:(

Hi Simon

Sorry to read about your car. It is a prospect most of us gen 1 owners have to live with, even when it is a relatively small percentage of cars it affects.

I don't know if you are a member of 911UK, but there is so much good info on there about rebuilds and particularly Hartech, which appears to be the gold standard.

The good news is that your car will be more valuable in the eyes of many prospective 997 buyers. It's amazing how much the IMS/bore scoring threat makes Hartech rebuilds a big plus on wish lists!

The other good news is that you end up with a higher performance 3.9!

Keep us updated.

Chris

Hi Simon

Sorry to hear about the engine failure, but great to hear you are looking for a rebuild and not throwing in the towel. Mine too is an early Gen 1 car, and it is one of those things we all worry about. Keep us posted about how you get on, I have only ever heard good things about Hartech, so you are in safe hands there.

Hi Simon,

I have just seen your post, sad to see the news.

But if it makes you feel any better I purchased a 997.1 C2S last year which had the Hartech Engine re-build work carried out already, and she runs like a 'dream' !

Jas

Thanks Jas

The Hartech team have been really helpful in walking me through the process and understanding what needs to be done. I will keep everyone updated on how it goes. Now I am over the finacial shock of what needs to be done, I am really looking forward to getting her fixed and back on the road. :)

Simon

Hi Steve

Thank you, its certainly an issue I am now very knowledgable on! Always a chance to learn! My advice to anyone buying and owning a 996 or an early 997 is to have it looked at and if in doubt replace it with the new bigger IMS. My car is 16 years old and well looked after, this part can be replaced for £2k and a rebuild is £10k plus....

Mine is an ealry 997 and so had the smaller, weaker IMS. Here is what it looked like post failure...anyone with a squeamish disposition.. look away now....

Best Regards

Simon

That's horrendous. I think the worst thing about these failures is that there is no prior warning of actual failure. All we can do is check oil filters and send oil away for analysis in the hope of catching it or replacing it which is not always the long term answer. If only it was noisy like a wheel bearing before failure.

I am toying with the idea of a rebuild while mine is running ok. Glad to hear yours is in good hands.
