New to me 944 S2 1992 Red Coupe

Hello all, I'm pleased to finally be part of the 944 club!. I have been looking for years and toyed on a few but never happened. Had a string of 996's and various other cars. I have finally added 944 to my small collection. Its a beautiful Red S2 with comprehensive Service History to boot. Porsche / PARR and most recent few years with JAZ for its belts this year too. It's believed to be on the original sills and has been garaged most of its life, to be believed by Its condition. No dash cracks and little to no wear inside. Really chuffed so far. I've got it booked in with the Porsche Specialist I use near me for a once over so fingers crossed all Is well.

It was featured in GT Porsche Magazine August 2015 so that was a nice touch having a copy included.

I plan to address the softness of the handling. I intent to buy some GAZ Coilovers (retain the original bits of course)

I need help with what type of Spacers to use??.

I'm keeping the freshly refurbished D90's and New conti's but want to achieve my desired look/feel. Other than a MOMO Prototipo Wheel I'll be leaving everything else alone!. I want to go as far as cleaning underside and correction of the paint and sealant of some sort and just keep It clean and mechanically fit for trouble free fun hopefully!.

Anyone know or owned this example??.

I'll be attending Porsche Festival Brands but I didn't get infield display tickets unfortunately.. too late I expect?.

Welcome. One of the last S2's on a 92 plate. Why spacers if you are using the D90's? Stock wheels.

GAZ coilovers will only work if the car is lowered IIRC. Was the only option I had as my car is down 60mm (previous owners doing). Would need the rear re-indexing.

However plenty adjustment in the GAZ and with that and the car lowered you'll be much less wallowy on the road!

Hi Stuart.

Thanks yes one of the last was registered June/1992

I want to lower and have factored Re indexing for this so all good. I've always admired 944's and mainly always liked the ones that have been modified (suspension/wheels) I want to retain the D90's. Good to know the GAZ are working well for you and yes I want to get a slightly firmer feel.

I was aiming for the desired 'look' see picture below of a Cab I saw online (hope the owner doesn't mind me posting)

Well that's exactly what you'll get with GAZ and re-indexing the rear. You won't need spacers though!

Stuart

Cheers Stuart,

I'll be ordering them tomorrow. Do you recommend anything else while I'm at it. will the top mounts be ok do you think a fresh set OEM?.

I was told re indexing could take 10 hours work including fitting coilovers!. Depending on condition.

Do you recommend a gearbox oil change and Diff oil? not sure when It was last done I'll have to check.

No worries. I still have my original OEM top mounts on and they are still good. The price of new OEM top mounts is eye-watering, over £500 a side last I checked! If they seem fine I wouldn't be rushing to change them over! Yeah re-indexing is time consuming and can be a nightmare with stuff that's not moved for 30 years and is caked in crud.

It's a transaxle so the gear and diff oil are one and the same. For the sake of 2 litres of fresh gearbox oil defo get it done. If it has a gearbox oil cooler (unlikely on an S2) it will need 3 litres. You'll see a finned, twisty, aluminium cooler loop if it has a gearbox cooler, which comes out the back of the box and back round, 3 loops, and into the OS side of the box, if you have a cooler. It was only turbo s and late model turbo's that had them as standard.

Thanks for the informed reply. really helpful Stuart [;)]

I took It out today for a long drive to my sisters ran lovely as expected. managed to get right through the rev range! Its in need of that having done very little mileage in last 3 years.

Few pictures. nothing at all arty just a few to show how It's sitting at the moment. Few plans as mentioned but otherwise I just intend to clean and polish until I'm fully happy.

I have attached several images now only the last image's are showing []

Surly I can add several images at once.. I'll edit the above once i sort this out. *******

I oddly I almost purchased that 924 on Collecting cars auction few months back.. (featured alongside my now 944!) couldn't believe that when I saw the article.

Looks very shiny and straight! Love the bridge spoiler too and also nice to see sports seats in an S2. Love those bolsters!!

Looking very, very nice, thanks for the pics [8D] How do you find the weight of the steering and the pedals compared to other cars you've driven?

Is that a GR Yaris in the background? Not the only 944 owner to have a GR too

Cheers for the comments guys, love the seats nice and stung!.

I do find the 944 fairly weighty. Its very softly sprung too so thinking of changing to GAZ Coilovers. I've come from a string of 996's C2 and for me they are weighted perfectly. I just sold my 2019 Lotus Exige S3. Again very different beast!. The GR is very light compared. I absolutely LOVE the GR It's a keeper.

I have noticed lots a GR customers have a small collection of cars and have these as additions or daily's. Its truly a drivers car, you have to give it some time but Its genuinely hard to go much faster point to point In anything else!. Brilliant.

my 86 944 is heavy but does have p/s (was not not sure until i read they all do on the mk2) not sure if i had the steering rack refurbed or a new p/s pump if that would help in any way

Many thanks for the replies,

It's a beautiful example. I attended Festival of Porsche Sunday at Brands and saw lots of nice 944's and 911's! what a great turnout. Racing was good too.

PCGB Stand was really good to visit :)

It's booked in with Steve at Goss Hall to have a once over as I always do with any of my cars I like to get an idea on any defects or future bits to keep and eye on.
