Powder coating or Keracoting the cooling fan.

I want to get my cooling fan looking a lot better and was wondering if both sides of the fan are usually done, or is it just the side that can be seen? Anyone had it done please? TIA?

Not seen anyone over here doing keracoat but I have seen chatter about over on the US forums. A ceramic spray paint. Not sure it is thinner and better for the fan tips. A friend of mine powder coated his fan and it would fit back in place as the tips were touching the housing.

Normally is the whole lot and no reason to not coat the inside. It will help protect the magnesium. Just be very careful, seen a few fan failure occuring recently, they are only getting older...

I don't know where does it but interested to hear.

I would suggest that you do not have the fan powder coated.
Usually the fan would be stripped and prepared by bead blasting so as not to remove much metal.
Then the fan should be given a chromate conversion coating to stabilise the metal and prevent future corrosion.
Even if this is not done, they may use a two pack etch primer as an adhesion producing coating.
Then the fan would be heated in an oven up to the temperature the powder would cure, usually 180 to 200 degrees C and before the fan has cooled they would electrostatically spray the powder coating which normally at that temperature would melt on contact resulting in a thick coating of power between 100 to 200 microns at least on all sides and edges.
The pre-heating is to drive out any air trapped in the metal which would cause blistering when the powder is heated to first melt it and then cure the powder resins.
I would suggest either the thin ceramic coating or a simple chromate conversion coating which would weigh nothing and would protect the metal from future corrosion.
My suggestion from 50 years in the paint, powder and metal pre-treatment industry.

I would suggest a trivalent (non-chromate) coating nowadays as chromate (although still available) coatings have been banned due to the process being carcenogenic for the operatives. Can still be used on military equipment, but not sure a 964 cowling falls under that umbrella!

Update to this post is that I have found a place in Nantwich, Cheshire , T.M.Specialist Coatings do this Cerakoting so I will take it there this coming week. I will of course post a photo of the newly coated fan for anyone interested. Thanks for the replies so far. I’m thinking of having a copper/bronze type finish on it which will look different on a Baltic blue C4. Any thoughts?

Well this is a pic of the completed Cerakoted fan. I went with gold in the end as the bronze shades looked a bit dark, but once I take off the spare fan and put this one on, i will get the spare Cerakoted in a different colour. What does anyone think, it’s a bit pitted but can’t do anything about that!

There should be an image of the fan, I uploaded it to imgur.com but it’s not loading it up onto this site! Completely useless! Anyone else have trouble loading pics?

Good luck!
