Hi All, I have been a member of PCGB for a while and lucky enough to have a 991.2 GT3 and Macan but have always hankered after a air cooled 911 having grown up with various posters on my wall in the 1980’s.

im now lucky enough to be able to purchase one, and having looked at a few have found what I think is a really nice example advertised at JZM Porsche. The car was previously restored by Porsche Cambridge as part of a nationwide OPC scheme and auctioned for charity back in 2014, the car features here
https://www.driving.co.uk/news/video-is-this-the-perfect-porsche-911-sc-part-exchange-car-being-sold-for-charity/

as I say I have looked over the car and it’s being sold by a well regarded specialist with OPC service history, but it would be good to get any register guidance on anything else I should look out for or ask please, as my experience is more with 996, 997, 991 cars.

many thanks all

Hi,
The paint work on the car looks stunning. Strange on the JZM photos the windscreen wipers are on the passenger side.
Might be worth checking to see if the return to the proper position.
Personally not a fan of black as it does not show off the black trim. Was black its original colour?
They say its got the original owners book. I assume it has a full history.
They do not say anything about a matching number car -Chassis, Engine & gearbox.
I guess you will not be able to drive the car and check everything out.
I assume you should be ok for rust and oil leaks. It looks very clean.
They said the engine took a very long time to rebuild. Not sure what was up with it in the first place.
The whale tale was designed for the turbo which has an inter-cooler there. Personally not a fan of it on the SC.
Can you talk to the previous owner. Always a good idea if you can.
Check the authenticity document to see the original status of the car.
They might have changed a lot.
The SC will give you the true classic driving experience.

I was fortunate to see this car in the early stages of the dealership rebuild and you should be assured that it was thoroughly renovated by them, with high attention to detail. Seem to remember it was a black car originally - the whale tail was also part of the original ‘SC Sport’ package (which comes together with the front lower spoiler), the same as an SC Sport I owned many years ago.

Although black is also not my favourite colour, the pictures show a very purposeful look and it seems to sit well.
Have always kept a soft spot for a good SC... [8D] proper driving fun with a screaming 6.

I guess you have checked the ''Cars For Sale'' section of the website ? One of our members is selling his stunning SC Targa (but perhaps you are after a coupe only) :

The car ought to be good, coming from a specialist; I haven't had many problems with mine; these come to mind - check that the airbox has a blow-off valve fitted; it should have the hydraulic tensioners fitted; is the toolkit complete - orange inflator, collapsible spare wheel etc. Check the age of the tyres on those 16" rims, the three-speed air blower in the middle of the dash can sometimes play up - make sure all three speeds work. Check that the automatic heater control between the seats keeps moving the lever up and down as it tries to keep the cabin temperature constant.
Good luck with the purchase.

Thank you all for the responses, i Have compiled a list to cover off when I see the car again and also have an email out to OPC Cambridge for some further background.

it does look a very clean in first inspection, interestingly good spot on the windscreen wipers they are not currently working but will be looked at alongside an MOT, and other bits and pieces.

I did look at the PCGB member car, which is as you say stunning condition but just had a black coupe in mind.

thanks again your expert guidance is much appreciated

I posted some pics in the "Air cooled memories" post in this SC section of the forum which may be of interest.
I suspect there is ever more confidence when buying an OLD sports car from a recognised marque specialist. However given the current value of air cooled Porsches I suspect much of the retention of that is down to the history of the car. I did not view the add. I note that pse_SC suggests the car was "restored" ? That being the case an ideal would seem to be to be able to see a photographic record of the restoration process along with receipts for the work and parts utilised in the process... Idealy the SC would be an originally UK supplied car and as close to standard "original" spec as possible with as has been suggested everything operational.
Of course if future value retention is of no concequence then all thatt really matters is that everything works as it should and that YOU can enjoy it in whichever way you please.
