Any Recommendation for after market air con condenser for 1986 N/A 944944

Hi,
I‘ve been researching fixing the air con on my 1986 N/A 944. does anyone have any experience of after market condensers (as in the air con radiator at the front of the car) I’ve seen this advert from Design911 for a Mahle condenser for £218. However, I’ve heard tales of aftermarket ones not fitting correctly.
thank you in advance

Have your one out and get it re-cored by a reputable radiator specialist, then you know it will fit back again [;)][sm=kiss.gif]

Now that’s a thought. I wonder if a specialist could do the more modern (parallel flow?) type aircon condenser approach? rather than the original serpentine tube ones. Just need to find that reputable specialist which is always a problem and a price given £218 doesn’t seem to bad to me.
has anyone had any experience of these Mahle condensers for the 944.
thanks.

Hi Brett and Sam

That one fits correctly. I nearly purchased one a while back after mine sprung a leak, but ended up getting a very good used one instead. You will probably need your rubber grommets from your original one. I can also confirm it was the cheapest new option, but mind you have to add VAT onto D911 prices! I think there is a 10% off new customer offer that can also be applied. There are a few other suppliers for round about the £250 mark.

Also, when fitting, take care fitting your hoses on as I've found the weak point in the units is the connector pipe that connects to the discharge pipe (lower connector), so take care when tightening it up, get new seals too, £7 from Porsche for the correct ones. A tad expensive but at least I knew I was getting the correct ones!

Cheers

Hi Stuart,
Thanks for that. I’ve gone ahead and ordered one. yep they added vat. I rang a few places about sending mine to them to be rebuilt or as a model for them. But pricing, including postage of mine to them was reaching £350-£400.
Was reassuring to read your reply that was the sort of reply I was hoping for. I’ve got the air con compressor rebuild seals from Griffiths in America and I’ll get the green seals for use with R134a from Porsche.
Thanks again Brett and Sam.

No worries, good luck!

Since I decided I wanted working air con I've invested in a receiver/dryer, 2 condensers (both good used ones) and for my 2nd compressor I decided to buy a remanufactured one after killing the nose seal on my good used one by over tightening the belt [&:]. Seals replaced and happily running on R134a and leak free (touches wood [:D])

Luckily I have a mate with all the old school gear and access to plenty of cheap R134a. Only takes £15 off me for a pressure test and a re-gas when needed. Helps keep the costs down!!

When you get to charging it up it takes 30oz or 850g of gas. Also worth having it vacc'ed before you start and then putting about 10ml of ester oil into the system pre-fill.

Thanks for that Information on the quantity of R134a to use. I’m just in the middle of putting the green 134a compatible seals in the compressor as it was leaking pressure from there as well as the condenser. The compressor sucks and blows but was completely dry of oil so I’m assuming zero oil in the system and will add 150ml (5oz) of ester oil to the compressor and so feed the whole system.
I’ve bought and fitted the new condenser From 911design and it was an exact match.
One other issue now, and I haven’t found the answer yet is that the dryer/receiver you use for R134a has a different drying material to that previously used in the old R12 dryer. It should be desiccant type RH-7 Compatible with the R134a refrigerant.
No where can I find details of the desiccant used in the 944 dryers on sale.? Otherwise I’m ready to do a bit of filling in next few days.
thanks brett and sam.

I just bought a receiver/dryer that showed up as compatible with a 944. I don't think it matters if you use the old R12 or R134a gas. I certainly never had any issue and what you have pictured looks fine.
