Hi All
So my beloved 2003 996 Turbo has reached 70,000 miles. Time for a pre-emptive engine rebuild. Any recommendations and what is a realistic budget?
Thanks
Graham

Hi Graham

my friend is in the middle of this exercise as we speak having removed the engine himself.

not very helpful i know as he’s not had the bill yet but i will post when he’s up & running, he’s pretty much done a full nut & bolt restoration on his own

regards

Hi , my 996 tt 2001 is now on 145000 miles and doesn’t burn any oil and is as dry as a bone underneath, ?? if I had the cash I would rebuild my engine just for peace of mind. I would love to know the overall cost of a re-build so I can start saving ??

Hello Graham. These guys seem to be one of the best outfits around - www.hartech.org
I haven't used them myself, (yet), but when the time comes I will be going there.
I have to say though, 70K miles isn't that much...
Cheers, Graham.

I agree, why the preemptive rebuild these aren’t air cooled cars! That is very low mileage to even consider a rebuild of such a car.

Why the rebuild absolutely no need, the engines are near bullet proof.

Rebuilds on any car should e driven by compression tests

Forgot to mention, my 996 gen1 Mezger has done 50k and my 997 ge1 Mezger has done 87k, I've refurbished the turbos, changes corroded oil lines, coil packs etc and replaced all of the fixings including the manifolds but no need for a rebuild

Karl

Thanks v much - is your friend doing it himself or using a specialist? Any recommendations??

Well its overdue a major overhaul; it needs a clutch (never been changed) and there are several oil weeps. Turbos need servicing so I'm thinking might as do a "once and for all" job rather than ending up having to repeat some of the work later?

Why a pre-emptive build on a Mezger?

If mine was dry as a bone I wouldn't bother but given the various weeps, and the need for a clutch etc etc I thought Id' bite the bullett?

Don’t go in asking for a rebuild. These engines rarely need rebuilds.

Just ask for what needs to be done to cure the leaks. It might just be the RMS (yes that does leak on these engines too) Which is a very cheap seal once the clutch needs to be replaced anyway.

Thanks Karl

Did you do this yourself or can you recommend a specialist?

He has taken it to a place that i think specialises in 993 engine rebuilds but were happy to take it as it’s a mezger.

turbos were changes as the first project due to corrosion.

He’s done everything else himself with some help from me over the last couple of years, front end was the last project (inc petrol tank removal) so he could address some surface rust issues among other things.

happy to report after its running, hopefully he‘s run out of things to take off once the mezgers back in!!!

Hartech are famously known for their innovative fixes for vanilla 996s / early boxster engines, and excellent engineering all round .. I wouldn't be fretting on that score [8D]
