Which 991?

Hi all,

I currently have a 2012 Panamera Turbo. I’m looking at upgrading to a 2013-2016 991. A lot of the models are around a similar price bracket.
so I initially wanted to get thoughts on the GTS vs Turbo? Which would be the better one for driving and which for residuals?
the GTS is the last of the flat 6 3.8L However the turbos seem to hold value really well.
use will be for, short commute (2miles) to the train station (outside of covid) otherwise it’s very much only used for social and weekend use.

A very subjective question and there isn't really a 'right' answer.
I have a .1 GTS which I bought in 2020 without ever driving one, based purely on the huge amount of positive news online.
I looked at the Turbo S, which I may replace this with when the times comes but it was probably a step too far financially and the GTS seemed to make more sense to me.
I think both models will hold their value but alongside residuals it's also worth considering the true cost of ownership which isn't just depreciation.

I bought a 2013 S with lots of bits PSE chrono Bose adaptive sports sunroof etc and it’s all I’ll ever use really
fabulous 3.8 n/a engine .pretty much at bottom of depreciation curve at £50 k or so
the turbo is too much for me as I’d lose my license so if it’s a straight decision I’d have the GTS
 
I'm loving my T. Currently very good value if you can find a well spaced manual car. Its similar to a manual .2 GTS with the sports suspension. Everything is focussed on making driving it an "event": less sound deadening, manual, bucket seats, sports suspension. The narrow body-shell is better suited to UK B-roads too. I certainly can't imagine being able use more power!
 

Obviously I am biased as I have a 2014 991.1 Turbo S but it is the best car I have ever owned and does everything I have asked of it including continental touring, track days and local chicane sprint (current record holder in its class)

After having my first 4WD 964 then 996 C4S and a 997 Turbo I would never go back to 2WD but obviously this is a matter of personal choice.

The GT3 usually gets all the attention but it is too track focused for me but the Turbo S offers more in outright performance.

I was about to order a 992 Turbo S when Covid arrived but with the prospect of no touring or track days (as well as the pathetic local OPC trade in I was offered) I decided to wait and I am pleased that I did. From being rather underrated the S now seems to be recognised for the superb all rounder performance car that it is and the pre owned prices have increased although may be because there is a long lead time for the 992.

The S can be driven as slowly as you like with no ill effects but all the power I want is there when needed.

It is a shame that the 992 Turbo S has got even wider as our local roads are narrow but it will be my first choice when I change mine although I am in no rush to do so having only covered 19,000 miles. The only change I have made is to replace the short lived Pirelli's with Michelin Pilot Sport SP4S which are lasting better and arguable better grip.

992 Turbo S is a different animal from the 991 version and, as you are a sporting driver, I think you would appreciate the more focussed performance. However, there's an 18 month waiting list for bespoke models, so maybe you should be thinking about placing an order now. Good point on the Michies. No problem on the roads around North Devon BTW. :rolleyes:

Turbo S wouldn't be my immediate choice for a first time 911 owner, though. It's prodigiously quick, safe and well sorted, but difficult to get the best from without employing a rather unique driving style. The C2, C2S and GTS2 are all exceptional performers - streets ahead of any average sportscar.

Porsche residuals are generally good, so your choice should be reflecting your driving style, rather than resale value (fortune telling) . Forget about residuals until the time comes to chop it in! [:)]

I have had the opportunity to drive the 992 and it is different and I agree that I would not recommend it as a first 911 but I believe the thread was started as looking for help in choosing between a second hand 911 GTS as opposed to a Turbo. Both great cars but I think that the S is worth the extra money.

Thanks for the heads up on the 18 month wait, I might ring around to see if any dealers have an unallocated model.

It’s pointing to the GTS in general but I will test drive both. Then there’s the decision between 2WD and 4WD, gen1 or gen2?! Decisions decisions....

whilst both are very special and capable Cars. The "super car” appeal of the turbo does also stand out to me.
