Engine bay cleaning - Any suggestions?

Any recommendations on how to best clean the engine bay on a Boxster 986 2001?
I see horror stories of people descovering engine issues after cleaning. Maybe too much water used, or lose electrical connectors.
Any recommendations on simple cleaning products or detailing products?
I'm looking for simple soft brush on and wipe off.

Has anyone ever seen a "perspex" style engine bay cover allowing engine visibility?

Many thanks,
Steve

A dilute solution of Bilt Hamber Surfex and a load of rags to wipe it off worked for me.
It all depends on how bad it is.

Good work ??

Cleaning the engine bay feels more rewarding as it's usually a massive change and you can see instant results - just have to ignore the neighbours or your better half wonder why you're cleaning the engine bay?

Yeah, well done, Steve.
Often neglected when cleaning cars generally - I think it’s awful if someone details the rest of the car and the engine and bay’s a mess (even when you see it even less in a Boxster [:)]).
