Engine Cranks But Wont Start

Hi Guys

Good Morning hope everyone is keeping safe

I have a concern, Ileft the car idling for about 30 mins last night while I mowed the lawn, oddly there was a very slight rise in revs as if someone had depressed the clutch momentarily, I decided a short while later to take the car for spin, turned on the sports mode, car chugged buffeted then died, 100yds from my house, re charged the battery, changed the battery in the key fob.....with the battery now fully charged....the car will still crank but no start

So Im at a loss really

Kind Regards

Nick

Hi Lads

Cayman 987.1 S Sport Edition

Mil Light on the dash saying check engine, fully fuelled car, fuel pump goes through the prime routine you can here the pump working, could it be the pumps on the way out brief rise in revs when idling?

115K mileage engine, sweet as a nut until last night oddly

Check engine light doesn't sound good.

Coil packs? Crank position sensor? I think you'll need a diagnostic machine plugeed into it.

Yes your right Twinfan, its something I normally use, and Im usually up to speed with on my other cars such as my Audi TTS, however its trying to find a really good diag kit, I use VCDS on my Audis and its superb......I just need one for the Porsche

Nick,

Fuel supply could be the problem but you’d need to confirm that you’re getting a spark before taking that route … not that easy on the F-6 layout! I suppose you could try disconnecting the MAF sensor to see if you can get the engine to start (the system reverts to a default setting), but I’m not hopeful.

As Dave says your best bet is to get some diagnostics on the case to give an indication where the problem lies since this will show if the fuel line pressure is OK and if the ignition is functioning.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff, & Dave

I will give the MAF sensor a disconnect, I could I suppose do a hard battery re set, I will try each and see if I can get a result in some way, thanks lads have a great Easter Holiday if you guys can

Kind Regards

Nick

Nick,

On the subject of suitable diagnostic kit iCarsoft sell Porsche-specific devices and seem to be well respected, although I can’t speak from experience.

These cheap analysers are good for the basic DIY stuff, but for more complex problems it’s essential to have PIWIS or equivalent. You might also want to look at the more expensive Durametric offering.

Hi Jeff

I like the sound of the durametric, if I can data record even better, and check and test modules that will be brilliant

Thanks Jeff

Nick

I think that the iCarsoft can stream data Nick, but you’d need to check the specs and/or contact the supplier to confirm all the features.

If you do decide to purchase something it would be good to hear your impressions.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff

Yes it would be beneficial for the rest of the guys if they were possibly thinking of purchasing a diag kit.

And I think ICarsoft is an affordable alternative for a quick heads up data capture, you can then supply this to your preferred Porsche Specialist or OPC to prime them prior to your visit.

Nick

Interesting turn of events, just done a hard battery reset, PSM has Failed and THE PASM has failed, also the drivers window wont go back up when the doors shut????

To re-set PSM turn steering wheel lock to lock, and then drive at about 6-10 mph and it will re-establish where the wheels are pointing. To sort your windows, open fully both sides.. Close fully both sides and all should be sweet.

Its a Porsche thing - show it who is boss.

Sorry, didn't see that the engine won't start - can't help with that....

Do you not have membership of the AA or equivalent? I have Brittannia Rescue and also get it covered by insurance and with home start I would be phoning them. I would expect them to be able to give a diagnosis if it is a straightforward problem. Good luck.

Cheers Steve, I have green flag, I will get the car recovered to my specialist if things dont work out

Just a thought - how old is your battery? I've read lots about 'iffy' batteries causing all kinds of electrical issues even if the car starts and runs.

Can you hook it up to a booster/jump start it to see if it'll at least run?

Hi Twinfan

The battery thankfully re charged over night on the battery conditioner, so I think its more than this

Thank you for you thinking of me though

Nick

It may be fully charged but not putting out the right voltage if it's old and worn? Old batteries have been known to throw up lots of faults as the electrical system is very sensitive.

I wouldn't rule out a faulty battery just yet unless you know it's only a couple of years old.
