993 2S - Exhaust mufflers to replace and new shock absorbers all round.

Hi All,

I have to replace the exhaust mufflers on my 993 2S and I wondered if any can shed some light on the direction to take with purchasing new ones. My garage GCR has recommended Dansk for replacing them, but looking around on the forums, some owners are recommending Fister II and Fister III's. I'd appreciate a little help with anyone who has replaced them with a particular manufacturer / brand and if you have chosen to replace them yourself, because I'm thinking to do just that.

My second request is, I have a weeping front left shock absorber so with the originals still on the car i will replace all of them. Again can any one suggest the best brand to enhance / improve the 993 ride and handling and possibly suggest who would be the ideal garage to use / specialise in this.

Many thanks - Karl.

Hi Karl

Dansk are not particularly favoured, I think the quality of their stuff is OK, just the sound doesn't appeal .. Fisters & RSRs (Carnewal) are modified standard mufflers, RSRs at least offered on an exchange or buy outright basis. Canrnewal also offer factory Motorsound new boxes.
Motorsound and RSR are similar in noise levels and lack the freaded drone at cruising speeds, I think the Fisters may be a little louder.
Overall, I've seen more better feedback on RSRs than anything else ..no affiliation except as a satisfied customer even tho' I'm not a sated customer yet !

With a 2S you have M033 as standard, leaving the best option IMHO to be Bilstein B8s keeping the M033 springs.

The ride will be firm but the damping quality is difficult to better, much more supple than standard, none of the crashing of the standard issue
Plenty of other candidates with varying capabilities and prices, but B8s are excellent on variable roads and combine well with M033.
Porsche Classic Bilsteins are identical (apart from the paint job AFAIK) but a trifle more expensive ..[8|]
The fact my Carrera S rides on that very combination does not restrict my advice .. [8D]

Cheers, Maurice

Hi Karl,
I had a similar issue with a weeping damper and replaced all four with the 'new' Porsche Bilstein's. They seem OK but make sure you measure the ride height before you start so you know where you are and have a reference point when it comes to setting the ride height.
Regards
Morgan

Thanks for coming back so quickly Maurice, very helpful - I'll take a look at the web links you have sent over tonight.

Best - Karl.

Koni FSD are another option for the shockers, used on mine with the original M033 springs (as specced by the first owner). Nice ride on these... with 18 inch hollow spokes.

Silencers replaced on mine were Bischoff or Gillet, I think from Porsche themselves in 2014, along with some new tinware at the time [;)].

If Chris is suggesting Dansk then are you trying to work to a particular budget? If you want standard then OEM is best. If you want louder then RSR, Fister, etc have a lot of supporters but the price will depend on a) can they repair and modify your existing silencers? b) what is their price if you cannot provide an exchange silencer? c) will you have to buy and provide brand new OEM silencers?

Regarding suspension then if you are near GCR then you will also be fairly close to Centre Gravity up the A5 near Hinkley. You might end up with a complete suspension overhaul as a result though!

Hi Ian, not really working to a budget, would like to see what options are out there apart from the standard OEM product. Don't know how bad the old mufflers are until I taken them off, the car is no different in terms of sound at the moment, but I'm guessing they have been on the car since new, milage is 65K.

Not sure I'd enthusiastically endorse Center Gravity for reasons best retained private .. PM me if you want the gory details .. [8|]

I had to replace my suspension due to the rear leaking. After research and speaking to other 993 owners I went with the Koni Active Dampers with Original Springs as bullet proof.
Amazing change which happened 2 weeks before another trip to the Isle of Man. Bought from Design 911 and had my Indi JGC Porsche in Brackley fit them. Also needed the rear drop links as seized on as all suspension was original. I also decided to replace all top mounts whilst doing the rest. Due to my trip and not many people I would trust setting up the suspension on 993s ended up at OPC Reading as CG and other fully booked.
I had to learn the new setup driving to Liverpool and then a few laps on the Island before getting back up to 130mph on the great derestricted roads.
Love the new feel after 18 years of ownership
Good luck with what you decide
Graham

Hi Graham,

Thanks for your reply, really good to hear what you did for your 993, it is great to have outside feedback from other owners. I will research further on the Koni products.

Karl.

Hi Karl

I gave Graham the same advice I gave you .. my advice considered other options which had been reported on, but came down firmly on the Bilstein option (incidentally, also the Porsche option !..)

Make of that what you will .. [8|]

cheers, Maurice

Hello couldn’t find a specific 993 exhaust muffler post. I have a C2 which came fitted with Dansk rear boxes (fitted in 2019) they are way too loud for me and on the motorway the low rumble makes your ears hurt. I don’t care about the power impacts etc as the 993 is quick enough but wondered if anyone had a view on which sections/ suppliers would the quietest and if anyone knows a good place to get a set fitted. I am Kent based. New member having only just bought my first 911 a few months back.
