89 G Series - 4 new tyres...

I have a 89 G series 3.2 that has come with 10+ year old tyres. I am consequently replacing them all - the car won't get heavy use are there any recommendations as to what would be the best tyres for this car?

I would stick to the Conti Sports that I think it would have been shipped with - but are there better tyres today?

Non-heavy use - general driving. I've a GT3 too - so I am not wringing the neck of this car - it's 30+ years old!

I’d recommend Bridgestone S02’s. I’ve used them for years - on both cars. Good wet weather handling too.

Hello Mike, You are making the right decision, 10 year old tyres are definitely beyond their use by date.
As 993C4 says, it is good to use a premium tyre. One that is Porsche accredited eg 'N' homologated, as this dates back to the 80's, like our cars. I've previously had Pirelli and found them good in the dry and the wet but prefered Michelin so I'm on the second set. This means my experience of the Pirelli's is quite dated as the Michelins run and run. I don't know how they make them so grippy in wet and dry conditions and to go on for so many miles. The Michelin Pilot Exalto have been upgraded to PE2 since I last bought so I hope they are just as good, or better. Unfortunately, I can't confirm until later in the year when I buy my next set. I agree with Steve and Sue
I have an 88 G 3.2 and have found the Michelin tyres to be very good, though I have to say my car is never out in the winter / salt weather so you might conclude that my account is not all encompassing.

I always used to fit contisports and was very happy with them (last purchased in 2016) but when I came to buy my new set in September 2020 they were like Hens Teeth to find and when you did, they were stupid money. My guess is that they were all old stock (which is what you need to avoid) and subject to profiteering.

I believe that the Porsche homologising N rating is for a good reason so personally always try to stick with that as a prerequisite. I am also not sure how an insurance loss adjuster would view that if it came to it. I understand Pirelli to be good on grip but not on longevity, which would explain the good grip of course. I think they are also relatively expensive per set.
hope these comments are helpful.

Thanks all above for this advice. I'll let you know how I get on.

I've just bought & had fitted the outrageously expensive new Porsche Classic radio. I didn't realise there was a similar Blaupunkt one that certainly looks more period and I suspect is better - so I'll write up how I get on with the super expensive option.

You would just fit the original Pirlli P7 wouldn't you. They are N homologated by Porsche.

I got the Michelin Pilot's and I've used it very little but they are better for sure than the 10-year old hard old tyres. So big improvement it seems and they look fine too. It was very tricky finding a full set.

Thanks for your help.
